Salary: 2,005,000 won (Could i negotiate this?
Shared-accomodation
20 teaching hours
Overtime rate W25,000/hr
Health and Pension (50/50)
Standard severance
Airfare reimbursed to W1,000,000 but my flight from UK would cost about 1.4 million
Settlement money W300,000
Vacation 6-8 weeks
many thanks.

it's a good deal, but what's with the 5,000 won in the salary? bus allowance?
20 hours of teaching is a little more than average for uni.
how many office hours are required of you?
how cramped and old is the housing?
also, since there are actually 4-months of vacation in the university year, what will you be doing for 2 of those months? teaching children's camps, maybe?
as for salary negotiations, some unis have a pay scale for different levels of education and experience. some are open to discussion.
btw, if you want to find any of your old threads, use the search function and type your user name in the *author* box.

Anything is negotiable! But with a university position...I think the salary will not change. Airfare is up for grabs. What do you have to loose by trying?
Shared housing? NEVER EVER SHARE! Demand single housing or forget it.
You'll resent sharing...no privacy...dirty roommate maybe...no privacy....dirty bathroom maybe....did I say no privacy?
9 times out of 10...shared housing is bad! Besides...you're an adult!! Why share?!?!?
Does the school director or university president share his home? No!
Salary is fine.
Your info looks just like the university contract ad that was placed by my university! We have shared also...but none of the teachers accepted it and we all have single apartments; 3 bedrooms, living room, kitchen, balcony, bath. |

I would work on getting the "shared housing" removed from the contract.
shared living is a bad idea, imo. |

Since i am negotiating from abroad, this job does sound pretty good for me. The salary and airfare are fixed according to the guy in charge, and have just asked for single accomodation. I would be required for 1 office hour a week, and 2 hours for othe rteaching activities with which i don't have a problem.
If he can't offer the single accomodation, what are my choices? Once again, any advice would be more than welcome! |

ask for a housing allowance and find your own flat.
that's about your only option as i see it.
or kill your room mate?

Good salary for down south. Negotiating is tricky since university jobs are so competetive. There are countless teachers who would love to work at a uni for 2 mil. If you don't want to, they can easily find someone just as qualified who will.

That sucks. Especially for a uni. However, if that's the only housing they have available, there's not much you can do other than getting your own place. Again, difficult to negotiate (see above).
More than average. A bit of a heavy load, especially with marking and what-not.

Very good. However, at 20 hrs. for your base, how much OT would you be doing?

Standard.

Excellent. Most unis don't pay this.

Most unis don't pay this, either. Trust me, at a uni job, you are very lucky to get any airfare at all. Don't split hairs over this.

Very generous. Again, most unis don't pay this, either.

Slightly below average. However, are you paid overtime for work done during the semester breaks? If so, then it's a good opportunity to make money during your breaks.
All in all, it really depends on what your alternative options are. If you're coming from the UK, I can only assume that you're not available for interviews. If that's the case, your options for unis are severely limited. This seems like a good job to start off with -- not too bad at all. Do it for a year and apply for better uni jobs at the end of the year if you're not happy.
One caveat is that a lot of unis down south are in small cities, which can be very boring and isolating. Make sure the town is somewhere you wouldn't mind living for a year. |

Was told the salary and airfare is fixed and there is only shared accomodation. Is 2 million won in the south gonna allow me ot save? That is if i dont kill my room mate first? |

of course! that's over 2 grand U.S. you won't be paying any rent. food is really cheap. restaurants are between 4,000-6,000won for the most filling of korean dishes.
a bottle of gut-rot soju is only 700-800won.
for more cash, you will have plenty of time and opportunity to do %#!^@#& lessons. (ssorry, i had to censor that word because it is illegal to teach %#!^@#& lessons in korea). but if you DO teach %#!^@#& lessons, you could charge minimum 35,000 per hour as a uni instructor, and higher fees for multiple students in one leson.
no worries.
your main expense will be the initial month. you get paid every 30 days here, so your first pay will be in your second month here.
you may initially have to buy a heap of household items to get yourself set up in the flat. but even that stuff is much cheaper than N.america, assuming that is where you're from. |
