|
|
I read in the IHT that there would soon be 3 weekly direct Toronto-Seoul flights. 14 hours Toronto to Seoul and about 12 hours Seoul to Toronto, I think was the figure. I know someone here last month or so was claiming he flew a Toronto-Seoul polar route but I could find no listing on expedia.ca for any direct flights.
Anyway, good stuff for east coasters. |

That sounds like a much better trip. Vancouver Airport still makes me grumble. |

every Thursday and Sunday, they've been going since October.
There was a third one on Tuesdays, but the last one was this week. |

If I ever had plans to return home, this would be kinda sweet... barring the fact that you'd be on a plane for an ungodly amount of time. I actually look forward to the stop overs, just to break the tedium.
Hey, I just did the math, that's actually shorter. I never have to go through Vancouver and it's inhuman customs line again! |

Did you have trouble there? The airport itself is beautiful. There's that classic line from Douglas Adams: "It can hardly be a coincidence that no language on earth has ever produced the expression 'As pretty as an airport.'"
But I always thought the new terminal in Vancouver comes close, all that natural wood and running water. |

Yeah, It's about ten or eleven hours from Seoul to Vancouver and about twelve the other way, so the non-stop to Toronto would be a dandy change.
Whoever said they're flying Singapore Air: I think they fly a direct Singapore-Newark route now. 18 hours in the air - Now that's ungodly. Thing is, the entirety of the planes doing those routes are business and first class, so at least you'd be comfortable (at about $2,000 per seat).

The Vancouver airport is nice, just not when you are forced to stop there halfway through a numbing journey. Korea to east coast Canada is a pain in the fucking ass, but now less so. |

When I first flew here in the Summer of 2003, I flew Halifax - Toronto via Air Canada, and Toronto - Seoul direct via Korean Air. Where's the big change? Was KE Air the only airline that flew Seoul-Toronto direct, before? |

It was the "stand in the brown line to get a ticket to stand in the blue line which lets you into this line over here" stuff... while I really wanted to pick up a bottle of water and hit the w/c. Instead, I stood in lines until finally my plane was leaving and they told me to never mind standing in the lines... just hurry across the airport.
Oh yeah... and the part where you have to pick up your bag, carry it 5 metres. and put it in a little hole if you want them to ship it onward. Lots of stupid little unnecessary things everywhere, I felt.
First time I went through going eastward, Air Canada was on strike too... however to be honest, Pearson was worse that time since the bagage machine had broken down 6 times in one week and they were starting to suspect sabotage by strikers. They lost a beautiful box of Korean pottery that trip too-- a gift from my future in-laws to my folks.
*grumble* |

The change is that now it's an Air Canada flight, instead of Korean Air. I think that the new route starts in July. |

WhenI first came to Korea in the spring of 2002, the Korean Air website listed a daily flight from Toronto to Seoul. My hagwan sent me the confirmation that I was on one of these flights. All I had to do was call Korean Air to arrange to pick up my ticket at the airport. Sounds easy?
Called Kor.Air - they tell me that no such direct flight from Toronto to Seoul exists. Hmmm. Check website again. Yes, the schedule is there, listed with departure and arrival times for the next few months. Try to purchase a ticket online and it even says the number of remaining seats on the plane.
Call Korean Air (Toronto office) again. Same old story - no such flight exists, Korean Air does NOT fly direct from TOR to ICN. I made the mistake of trying to argue with her broken English for about 20 minutes, printed off the website page and faxed it to her. The response told me that these direct flights had been cancelled MONTHS ago, and they would give me no reason as to why
a) the website still allows you to purchase online tickets, and
b) I had an itinerary faxed to me from Korean Air in Seoul that stated I was on one of these flights.
In the end, Korean Air told me to call Air Canada to pick up my ticket. Of course Air Canada was as baffled by this as me, and in the end, it worked out that the flight code on my ticket was traced by AirCan to be the regular AC flight via Vancouver.
TO make a long story short, as much as I detest the Vancouver layover (same reasons as someone else stated with the lines and the baggage thing) - I fear getting on one of these planes from Seoul to Toronto for fear that I will be incredibly disappointed when we stop in Van anyway...

2,000 bucks? that's it? Sounds too cheap to me. |
