Martin Luther King, Jrs birthday holiday is on Monday. I want to do something short about this holiday in my classes for Monday. Any suggestions for a nice, quick yet informative lesson? (I mean like 10 mins long). Im thinking a quick talk about who he was and what he did for minorities in our (usa) country. Maybe a crossword or something.
Kids really like learning about the different holidays and people associated with our country.. its great!
(ha, if only I got 3.5 for THAT!) |

CIA assassinations of movement leaders. You can cover all sorts of them, easily fill up a whole month's worth of classes. |

cause Jefferson was a great guy. Who cares that he owned slaves and was as moral as OBL. Jefferson was a terrorist too. |

Going over the "I have a Dream" speech comes to mind. One of my favorite speeches ever. That and the one by Churchill. "What kind of men do they think we are..." |

Hi Butterfly,
Please don't take this the wrong way. It is being said with kindness.
Who are you teaching?
If you are teaching kids I seriously don't think a lecture about Martin Luther King is going to inspire them or interest them. Unless they are at a very high level do you really think they will understand?
Univeristy students or adults...............DON'T CARE. Most of them know nothing about a war in their own country, or understand why the Americans are still here after all this time.
Maybe the students you are teaching are different from those I've taught. Mu experience has been that history does not interest them........Korean,
American or any other kind.
Sad but true.

Hrm, well its certainly not as interesting as hearing about thanksgiving or halloween but its amazing how their little ears were glued to me as I told them of the history of thanksgiving. Maybe you underestimate their interests? I think Korean children are quite educated and interested in things.. as most children are naturally curious. I thought Martin Luther King was an interesting subject because I have experienced racisim here so want to lighly show them that its not okay and that people have fought for that sort of thing not to happen. As well, just telling a little about America... we arent perfect and also, we honor more than just 'white folks' in our country.
It will be short but sweet, but I certainly feel they will be interested in hearing about it. (some may yawn, granted, but mwahaha.. im the teacher so tough luck!)
BTW: Ive made a 2 page word document with a brief timeline of Dr. Kings life. If youd like it, mail me your addy and Ill send it to you. |

The problem with democracy is you have to tolerate this sort of idiocy. |

ah yes, way to show more ignorance about America. I'd be impressed if you came up with a 1/4 decent source that makes the case the CIA was involved.
And I agree with canukteacher. Good luck to you though OP |
