2.5 years in Korea, on my 3rd job.
Job#1. :- 1.8M
job#2 :- 1.9M
job #3 :- 2.1M
I'll be after a whole new start next May or thereabouts, and my basic plan is to never take a job that pays less than before...
What has been your pay progression like? |

No offence Rapier but raw money is not relevant.
How many hours does "the job take" is very important.
I am closing in on 8 years in Korea and I make "less" then you ... but I made a choice to take a job with low pay because of low hours.
Housing and Benifits are also important.

Job #1 : 1.2 M
Job #2 : 1.6 M
1.7 M
1.8 M
Job #3: 2.0 M
2.2 M
2.5 M
Job #4 2.1 M
Job #5 1.8 M
But, the hours have gone from 130 (Job #1 and pre IMF) to 90 ...
Yup, you make 300 000 more then I do per month but at one point I made 600 000 won more then you, and honestly, I don't want that job anymore.
There is more then money ... |

It'd be harder for me to do better than what I had my first year.
Year 1 - ~75 hrs/ month, 2.0 + complete control
Year 2 - 100 hrs/month, 2.0 + tow the line
It's a g.d shame, that's what it is. |

1st job - 1.9 good schedule too. averaged about 20 hours a week. TINY apartment.
2nd job - 2.0. Split shift, 10am-12:20....3pm-6:20 (then we got an extra class and it went to 7 o'clock)
3rd job - 1.95. Schedule was easy but the apartment was atrocious.
4th job - 2.5. Great schedule, and the apartment is first class. Great location. |

Job #1 - 1.9, crappy apartment, split shift, kindy.
Job #2 - 1.9, nice apartment, sweet 5 hour block shift, elementary and middle school only (I'd still be there but the boss was a psycho beeyotch from hell)
Job #3 - I'm paid hourly so it has fluctuated from 1.8-2.8 per month after tax and rent. Typical month is 2.1-2.4. Partial rent subsidy, split shifts, sometimes long hours, adult students, very stable and sane management. If not for the splits I'd call it a dream job.
I doubt I can keep the increases up forever, but who knows...
BTW, Daechi, I hate to nitpick but 10am to 6:20 is NOT a split shift. It's normal hours with a long lunch. You've got to start much earlier and finish way later to qualify. |

1st job- 1.8, roach-infested apartment. But 4-8pm type stuff, and the most slack and laidback environment. Too slack, actually. Kids were nuts.
2nd job- well, this was my tourist visa year, plus had a recruiting biz. But my main 2 gigs put together, were around 2.2/mnth for about 10 hrs/week. Bits and pieces of other smaller gigs sprinkled throughout the year.
3rd job- Varies. Fun job, teaching business english, which caters to my background. Able to write my schedule and vacation, but very challenging and keeps me on my toes. If there was ever a job that made me into a teacher, it was this one. I've become much more focused and serious about my work. I often miss the life and energy of teaching kids, though.

Lots of factors that make a simple "money in pocket" look a bit sketchy. It's been said thousands of times, I know.
Job 1 - 1.8, shared 3 bedroom apartment (not bad at all in hindsight), but turned into split shifts after 6 months for a while, in Cheonan, had Saturday shift (standard hakwon)
Job 2 - 1.8, single one-room, nice quiet neighborhood, crappy teaching environment, 9-4 schedule, in Cheonan, schedule was great the first six months as I finished at 1 on Fridays (middle school)
Job 3 - 2.0, lots of potential for overtime if I wanted it, great teaching environment, nice but small officetel in a great location, in Bundang, lots of prep involved, schedule changes up drastically every few months(TOEFL/SAT hakwon)
Prefer the current one, but still dissatisfied with certain issues that aren't related to money. |
