if anyone here is fat, dressing up would help. if korea is so image-driven (and i get this funny feeling it is) then 'beauty is only clothes deep'. unfortunately for me, we must teach wearing g-strings, so i'm on melba toast and water until the hippo jokes cease. us hippos have thick skins. though darts and arrows........

I'll back up what has been said here thus far. You will be given a hard time about your weight here. If you are self-conscious about it at home coming here won't be any easier. Damn, I feel like I'm sticking out like a sore thumb here just by wearing sandals to work.

My advice is that you can't let crap like that hold you back though. If you want to come to Korea just do it. Don't let opportunity pass you by. Worst case scenario is that you hate it and go home after a month or two and you'll at least have that experience of visiting Korea for a month or so.

Best Wishes!

As long as you wear socks with your sandals you'll be ok

Does Korean food really promote weight loss? Is it healthy eating that does it, or is it dysentery?

I posted this question on the Japanese board, but I thought I would do the same here just in case.

I am wondering if my weight is going to be an issue to Korean schools/ recruiters. I am 6'1", 325lbs, but I have been told that I carry it well. Is this going to be a strike against me? Will it keep me from gaining employment in Korea?

First off, make sure that your school gives you the whole weekend off. Long mountain hikes and bike rides in the countryside will help trim the belly. Eating Korean food and keeping the drinking down will also help with the weight loss. When I was teaching in Korea, I went down from 200 lb to 170 lb.

As far as the Koreans are concerned, they do talk openly about the Westerners' weights and are not as sensitive as Westerners when talking about things like weight. Koreans will ask you how much money you make and how old you are.

simple answer! dont think about teaching KIDS!!

kids say the darndest things we all know this...

True - you will be constantly teased if you teach Korean Kids.
Your nickname will probably be "Pig Teacher".

I am 6'1", 185lbs (83kg) and some of my students still tell me "Teacher, you're fat! You're a pig".

Korean adults tell me - I look fine.

As someone who had almost identical stats when I got here (6'2 340) I will say it will get on your nerves with the staring and someone times random strangers will feel the absolute to need to inform you that you are indeed fat, and yes that includes adults. A little advice EAT KOREAN FOOD. I am down to 280 in 8 months, I walk a little bit more and I eat Korean food, the only change I really made. I also have a thyroid condition. THe portion sizes make all the difference. If you have been teaching kids for years then I am sure that you are used to what kids say. But your credentials I am sure are much more impressive then most of the people who show up here. I think you will be fine.

To deal with random strangers who grope you (yes it does happen) I usually bear hug them. I pick my kids up and helicopter spin them on a regular basis. My size means I am a human jungle gym.

I was about 340 lbs and I'm 6"2 when i came here last October. I have to agree with other people, if you dress well it overcomes alot of the issues. Plus, since I started teaching compared to computer programming I've lost 80 pounds.

If this is something that would make you happy, then by all means give it a try. Weight is a small issue. Given a more active lifestyle and playing with kids all day the pounds melt away.

Yes, from '03, but I resurrected it in order to pose the question I did upthread.

So a diet of Korean food is good for weight loss, then.

Maybe 1/3 of my daily meals is Korean food. I think more active lifestyle was the big thing for me. 10 hrs a day behind a computer.. compared to 8 hrs playing with kids...

which one do you think burns more calories? =D
