A few friends of mine are working at Oh Sung Sik/OSS. And they are not happy about this...
while the pay has been on time, teaching hours are subjective. The owners are using a standard OSS contract issued from the home office.
Teaching hours are 30 hours a week. Not 120 hours a month which is standard. Most months, both teachers have had in excess of 20 hours O/T by their reasoning. OSS goes by 30 hours a week only. No O/T. None.
Depending on when you sign your contract...you could get anywhere from 6 hours O/T up to 24 hours. But...they signed the contract and are stuck...for now. I just think it's shaddy on the owners part...they have to teach 6 hours straight without a break. No break. 5 days a week. And teach way over 120 hours many times. Any others at OSS care to reply?

Sorry to your friends.

Your not clear why is it "shaddy on the owners part"? It just seems your friends didn't understand what they were signing. Did the owner lie or something.?? Did the owner mislead them?

I don't know the whole scope...wasn't there. But...one of my friends...been buds for 16 years and I know him well to vouch...he does not lie or BS around. He said that before he signed the contract...talked with the owner at least 6 times in person over 2 weeks. He only agreed to 120 hours and the owner told him...the contract is only for immigration...what we agree to, I'll honor, etc....
My friend signed. First few months were fine. Then the owner changed stripes. Class schedule changes when he arrives at work sometimes! The other teacher works at OSS in seoul and the same thing happen to her. 6 classes a day are a lot with no break. Both were thinking 120 hours a month.
I'm just saying...if it ain't spelled out....120 hours a MONTH or whatever...you could....feel....cheated. So...that's why I call the owner shady.

Many of us at our school were teaching 6-11 hours without breaks until a few months ago, when the owners jacked up tuition so much that entire classes quit.

Now I have a more manageable schedule.

I imagine there are lots of people on this forum doing 6-hour shifts week in week out. Did it myself my first couple years here, it wasnt so bad.

I'm sorry your friends are so busy tabulating their monthly hours -- so a given month has a couple extra weekdays, boohoo. Their monthly salary is based on normal working hours. If youre salaried in the west, try telling your boss that this month was 2 days longer than last month & you demand overtime.

& sudden class schedule changes? Oh my god, call the labor board.

I'm not vouching one way or the other for the outfit that you name, but on the strength of your criticisms, I dont see anything terrible.

Like all the large chain schools, the local manager can make the job bearable or make an otherwise good job into a living hell.

I worked at an OSS last year, and while I always got paid it was one of the most difficult jobs I've ever had.

The 6 hour shift was standard, I did get overtime but I had to fight for it.
I simply refused to work any extra classes unless they agreed to pay overtime.

There are plenty of complaints about this chain on the Job info journal, so I guess you can go from there.......... Confused

Depending on what the contract says, they may have to do them. Does the contract say 120 classes or 120 hours of teaching. My old boss used to pull that one. 120 classes is not 120 hours. A good boss will not do that to you. However if you are asked to do overtime you can refuse. It is totally up to the teacher whether overtime is done. Hope this helps....
