You guys are awesome! And you are definately not "a washed up loser".
Man- i think it takes alot of guts for us "older folk" to come here- and stay here. This country is very is not too kind to the 'aging' population- particularly the foreign ones..........................
but we're doing it! And good for us! |

I am over thirty.
Actually, thirty is starting to sound sort of young these days. |

Yep, I'm old, and cool. And you're dumb, and an a-hole. I'd rather be me ... |

Last year, before I turned 30, I read an article that said that 30 was the new 21.
In a way, it's true. We're really starting to LIVE our lives at thirty. |

Here's what may be a controversial topic, but it's not intended as an insult. I noticed that my school started concentrating on hiring younger staff, foreign and Korean, because the over-30 foreign and Korean staff had a tendency to stand up to management when it was being ridiculous while the younger staff tended to be quiet and take it.
Has anyone noticed this trend at other schools? Do the ajumma teachers stand up for their rights a little more than the fresh college grads? Do older teachers tend to butt heads with management while younger teachers tend to just quit and run? |

| I too see what you do. I can only speak for myself here- but definately the older I get the less crap I will tolerate from bosses. I will stand up and argue if necessary- but 10 yeras ago I would have been afraid to lose my job if I did that. |

my school is much more into hiring older teachers.
our age range is i think 27 -36, with one part-timer who i'm scared to guess her age because maybe she'll see it and stab me.
of course, my school treats its teachers with a great deal of respect and listens to their suggestions more than the average hagwon, it seems. |

I only have a small number of coworkers to compare- but here it seems that the older they are the mellower, and some of the younger ones still have their need to uphold their egos at every turn. Still they are hiring younger teachers, and mostly male.
One thing about some of the older teachers- they have been let go if they are just grumpy and not fun, or a little too touchy feely with the girls. This is not a problem for me. |

I'll be taking you up on that- but I won't be up in Seoul for at least a couple of months- after I get back from Cambodia and Vietnam. |

i am older than every boss i have ever had. this has not been a problem - though i have noticed they give me less shit than they do some of the younger staff members. i think i keep my cool better than them however. generally i have found it to advantageous to be older - my employers appreciate it.
with kids for instance it is an advantage that i am a parent.
with adults, that i have working experience.
personally, age means nothing to me. it is just a result of the year one is born. one of my best friends in korea is only 18 |

24, but according to my older (over 30) waygookin friends here in South Korea "I have a lot to learn." I'm starting to believe them! |
