The Metropolitan subway linking Suwon, Gyeonggi and Cheonan, Chungnam will open on January 20 after eight years and four months of construction. The line that is opening on Thursday consists of Suwon, Osan, Songtan, Serjung, Pyeongtaek, Sungwhan, Jiksan, Doojung, and Cheonan stations. Currently under construction stations of Saema, Osandae, Jinwhi and Jijae will open at the end of the year.

Normal trains that make stops in 30 stations between Seoul and Cheonan will operate for 140 returns with between train times of 10 to 14.2 minutes. It takes 112 minutes to go from Seoul to Cheonan. Fast trains that only make stops at 13 stations between Seoul and Cheonan will operate mostly during rush hour with between train times of 30 to 60 minutes.

Six returns a day between Seoul and Cheonan stations and 24 returns a day between Yongsan and Cheonan stations taking 79 minutes from Seoul to Cheonan. The first train leaves Seoul station at 6:25 a.m., Yongsan station at 5:25 a.m. and Cheonan station at 5:00 a.m.. The last train leaves Seoul station at 10:30 p.m., Yongsan at 10:36 p.m. and Cheonan station at 9:36 p.m..

The fare is 2,300 won from Seoul to Cheonan for every train. The metropolitan subway will extend to Onyang Spa station, Chungnam at the end of next year.

Nice.

There are some more extentions being made that will be pretty useful too:

* I believe that the purple line 5 will be joined up with the Incheon line when the rail link to Incheon Airport finally gets going (in theory you'll be able to take the subway from Gimpo Airport to Incheon Airport)

* Handae-ap to Suwon link

* Bundang line will extend through Singal and into Yong-tong Suwon, possibly connecting up with Suwon station

* Line 9 (I think from Gimpo Airport to Banpo), from 2007

* Gangnam and Yeongdungpo-gu are possibly getting a Monorail system similar to the one in Kuala Lumpur.

This is all awesome. I didn't know they were working on this stuff.

I'm sure the taxi drivers and bus lines are not happy about the route to the Incheon airport.

Bus from my home to there: about 12,000 won.

Taxi: over 60,000 to 80,000 won

I don't suppose anyone knows about the line to Incheon airport? I hate those buses; it'll be nice when they become nothing more than a memory. I think the distance from Shanghai to their airport is about the same but they have a 420 kph maglev train connecting them that takes eight minutes.

The possibilities with this opening up are awesome. No more of that pissy traffic between Suwon and Songtan...although the travel time to Cheonan is pretty hefty. Two hours! Cheaper than the other travel options, though.

If they connect the Bundang line to line 1, that would be pretty heavenly. I do know that they added a new station after Ori recently.
