The last time I remember tears coming to my eyes was when I saw a video of a 5-year old girl in N. Korea trying to drink water from a small dirty creek. More like a trickle of water...she had a little orange plastic cup and a ziploc bag full of holes and was trying to scoop up some water while the person secretly filming it was telling her she shouldn't drink it and trying to get her to stop. His voice kind of cracked there

right there, and that's when I felt tears coming to my eyes.

Actually, that is the footage that I saw. An-chol. He ran away from N. Korea, learned how to film in secret from a Japanese guy he met and then went back in to take the pictures and show the world what it's really like there. He's anonymous though, and most definately a hero.

Do people who walk in and out of the NK border with China have papers? Is there even a fence of any kind? Could any SK just walk in there and start filming?

No, usually they have a reason. I met a lot of North Koreans in China but they were either businessmen or girls who worked in restaurants. I suppose it's also possible to smuggle people out underneath trucks or in bags and whatnot but the problem is what to do once you're in China, the third largest country in the world and with an extradition treaty with the North. That's where the problems begin. Plus they stand out, don't speak the language, and are very poor. Getting out of China is the hard part.
