I just got a letter from them explaining that because they won some little spat over taxation with the government on some product, the price has been reduced a lot. I bought the product a month or so ago, and they're gonna reimburse me the difference. How cool is that?

Costco is awesome for a few basics. Meat, cheese, coffee etc.

They are the champs of the "loss leader" though. One or two items in each aisle are really cheap but other stuff isn't. But people throw everything into their cart thinking it's all cheap.

I've seen people at the check-out of Costco having a fit when they are asked for 500,000 won for one cart of shopping!!!!

The product was a box of multi grain cereal. and apparently it had been taxed at 45%( yikes!) and the tax rate dropped to 5.4%, because they decided it was a processed food.

Why did you want to laminate a 15 year-old?

Maybe they thought those little signs and stickers with numbers on them are there for decorative purposes. Laughing

I try to go to Costco on weekdays because it's less crowded. I just can't deal with the old ladies all worked up in a frenzy and those who block the way with their cart as if they are oblivious to the fact that there are 20 000 other people there.

Over the years, I had developed such a cheapskate system, that my Sunday morning routine was to get a Sunday paper, look at the sell sheets for the three local grocery chains, make a list of only their loss leaders, and go to all three stores to buy strictly loss leaders.

I have to plead ignorant on this one. What exactly is a "loss leader" and how do I find them?

It's where a retailer will sell a product at a discount, actually losing money on the sale. This is done to get rid of stock, or to, in the case of COSTCO, bring in customers who will buy more expensive stuff to make up for it.

Why do I love Costco?

in a word- Lamb!

(I also go for the canned tomatoes, beef, and a few other things. But you'll find me there once a month the stock up on lamb.

Now if they would only carry goat. . .

Totally. I think Costco for hard to get items is a god send in Korea but I never went near the place in North America. Why? Because I don't want to spend $35 on a membership that lets me buy products only a little more expensive than what's on sale at Wal-Mart et al.

In North America Costco is good if you're a lazy shopper or time deprived, but I always found if you're smart, follow the sales, and buy in bulk when Wal-Mart et al. has a sale on price conscious products like toothpaste, you don't need a Costco membership.

And then, the evil, is Costco has all these "only at Costco" convenience food products like restaurant quality frozen gyros etc. You walk in to buy some soap, shampoo, and condiments and you walk out with a $200 bill because you loaded up on nifty, tempting frozen foods, a DVD, a gross of burnable CDs, a big box of chocolate chip muffins...
