There's some new MSN Messenger virus going around. Half my Korean friends seem to be infected. Their Messenger clients keep trying to send me PIF files (I know ... ATM machine, SSN/SIN number) with titles like "new webcam" or "funny". Grrr.

If my coworkers are any indication, given all the crap I find on our shared computer after I run a spyware and virus detector, Koreans seem prone to infection because of a need to click on just about ANYTHING sent via email or messenger. The lure that it might pop up a flash animation of a rabbit getting a plunger stuck on its head or a cute panda falling into a steaming pile of dog crap seems to have an irresistible pull on them like Sauron's ring.

And what the hell is wrong with Microsoft anyway? Why does Messenger circa 2005 even let people send each other PIF and SCR files? It would seem a most logical feature, four years later after [celebrity name]_naked.jpg.pif files tore up corporate email networks, that you have a little security tab that autoblocks *beep*'ing PIF, SCR, and COM files? Hell even block EXE files. This shit is in Outlook. If you really want to send an EXE, zip it or change the extension. And when was the last time Windows used PIF files (I know)? *beep*. The only thing that uses PIF files (I know) these days are viruses.

And the whole matter is made worse because by default Windows, even XP Professional, hides the extension name. Like extensions, like .jpg or .doc, scare people. It's not Mac like. So hide it. Only power users really need to know file types right? Microsoft will hide scary confusing three letter acronyms from you and do all the hard work. Just drink your soma, citizen.

*beep*'ing Microsoft.
