This is the most thorough newspaper article I've seen on some teaching-English-in-Korea issues: fraudulent credentials, illegal private tutoring, Korean emphasis on youth and looks in hiring, and more. And interestingly, the article (by a Korean) does NOT blame the westerners particularly - it says the Korean govt and hogwons both have to do better background checks and focus on bringing in better teachers.
I've taught at several hogwons, and now will have a public school contract. I was relieved to learn I have to provide a criminal record check. I've often wondered why this wasn't required.
Worth a read...

I'm actually curious, too, about what other ESLCafe readers think of the article's suggestions on how the English teaching profession in Korea can be improved, or at least better monitored. I've put in a poll question.
