Have you done, or might you do, a DELTA or Trinity Diploma?

I noticed that the Trinity LTCL Diploma in TESOL only requires a previous degree and at least two years of full time teaching experience.

I'm considering taking an authorized distance course sanctioned by Trinity to help prepare candidates to take their examinations, which I'd take in the summer or fall of 2006, depending on the pace of my preparation.

Anyone else thinking of doing it too?

Having recently finished the CELTA I'm enjoying the benefits of infusing the methodology I've learned into my teaching, and have been accessing secondary literature, which has also helped, and is drawing me further into the field.

I don't want to wait the two years required post-CELTA to take the DELTA, so the Trinity is the equally respected next best option. It'll open doors to director of studies positions long term and qualify one to work at top institutes worldwide (the good paying, well organized ones).

And the Trinity (unlike the DELTA) allows one to focus on young learners for at least half of one's studies if one wants, and has a reputation for being more practical in orientation, though easier to pass.

I would do the DELTA if I wasn't going to do a Masters pretty soon. If I had the option I'd take the DELTA before or instead of doing the Masters but as far as I can see they want you to do a 2 week seminar in Japan to do the distance version.

Yep, the two week orientation is a must and it is hard to get on the Distance DELTA as you have to find yourself a suitable local tutor. Getting someone who fits their bill of a local tutor is quite tough. I believe the Trinity Dip has a similar though less stringent requirement.

As for the MA v DELTA thing. I have my MA in applied linguistics/TESOL and I'm about to start the distance DELTA next month. THey are different things really and complement each other.

My MA was practical but not in the way the DELTA will be. To pass the DELTA, you have to demonstrate you know what you are about not just on paper (as with an MA) but also in the classroom on your feet.

Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing how the DELTA differs from the MA and I know that by this time next year, I'll have benefitted a lot from doing both.

You know, if you are serious about doing a distance DELTA and can wait until the autumn, you might want to contact the British Council and see if they would be willing to take an external candidate then. They run CELTAs for external candidates but so far, I don't know of anyone who has done the distance DELTA who hasn't worked there. Might be a possibility. It would certainly solve the hassle of finding a local tutor who satisfied Cambridge ESOL's requirements.
