I've been working at this company teaching biz English for almost one year. The girl who taught this job before me taught from 10am-1pm and was paid 2.0 and part of her time of teaching was lunch...and the company paid for her lunch while she was teaching. The company made changes when I started working here and my hours are from 10am-12pm for 1.4 mil. The business guys used these coupon vouchers to local restaurants and always had extra vouchers for me, so I'd go out to a 5,000 lunch with 8 other guys and sit and talk English for a half hour after teaching 2 classes in the morning...not really painful, I enjoy my private time, but I feel like it's teaching more. Here's where it starts to suck, the company took away the vouchers and now just give the employees a lunch budget which covers them lunch every working day (5,000 a day for each day in the month). I was going out with them for a while, but I found out that it was coming out of their lunch budget for them to pay for me, and now once a week or so they expect to go out to lunch and have me pay the bill for everyone, 40,000-50,000 and sit there and pretty much have English conversation class. Well, I started bringing my lunch or just saying that I have internet work/emailing to do, or just going to the gym during this time. In the past getting a free lunch to have English class was barely worth it, but now that they expect me to foot everyone's bill occasionally has me kinda pissed. Am I being a selfish cheapskate about it? I see it where if I pay the bill, they get to pocket the alloted 5,000 that the company paid for them...so I'm running out of excuses for not going, but the people are getting kinda mad, I can sense it, because they want their free English conversation, but the one time I had to throw down 40,000 to teach them English, I just got pissed and stopped wanting to go. What do you think?

I would get pissed off too. They should be paying you, not you paying them!

Just say you stop work at 12. You get paid for 10-12. Simple. No lunch.

i think you're amazing. i don't know you in real life but to let you know your posts are troll baits. you're the guy that has all these private jobs with all the inside knowledge, but none to give to anyone. but likes to come to eslcafe and ask questions about how he can get that extra 5000 won or how he can get that extra 30 minute lunch break, and have it paid for too or else should I quit if they don't pay for my lunch break. or complain about that irritating train fare across town.

but seriously dude you expect us to sit here and make sense of your long post about what, apparently getting jipped on a lunch? lunch vouchers? who cares man?

and why do you post a question asking whether you "should feel pissed" about having to buy your 8 students lunch? what are the possible answers?

just because you are teaching these guys doesn't mean they should always buy you lunch too. i think it's best to take turns. don't go all the time -- personal time is important, but you should contribute too. you say it's like english conversation class, but it doesn't have to be. let them know that lunch to you is "break time" and not teaching time (ie, don't ask you questions, blah, blah, blah, explain this, etc). they should understand. i used to teach these 2 businessmen after work. they always wanted to go out for food or drinks afterward. they tried to pick up the bill everytime, but i insisted on picking up the tab every couple times. i enjoyed their company for the most part.

Bring 5000 won each day for lunch and save 15,000 won on paying for them once a week. It's simple math.
