that's a bit extreme. the food in seoul is great ... if you like korean food. it was one of the things that kept me sane ... and a constant source of enjoyment.
that's not to say that every region in korea doesn't have its specialty ... suwon with its kalbi, ichon its rice, the coastal areas seafood, kyungju its bowshingtang, takkalbi in cheonju (?) ... etc. |

Living utside of Seoul can mean 1/2 hr to get there, and lets see... a 15,000 taxi ride will not kill anyone.
Seoul is not the only place to get good beer.
The east coast is 3 or 4 hrs our of Seoul. You got the sea in Seoul?
I can take a bus ride to Seoul and get anything I want. Who cares? Not everyone wants to live in that crowded smoggy place.
Do you think everyone thinks like you do? peple like to live in other places, and do other things. Some of us come here to get away from western food, korean food is great.
Cohiba, don't turn people off about where to live. Are you part of the Seoul tourism board? Why are you in Korea, by the way? |
Stop wasting your time.
Whiners will always find something to vent their frustrations on here. And they will always call you an apologist for not agreeing 100%. There's no way to win, so your best bet is to give them all the bandwidth they want to complain and go get busy enjoying your time here in Korea. |

Not true brother willie...im out in the boonies of Incheon and find it to be a pretty good wee spot in terms of nightlife/eats/general shenanigans...i mean a bus to gangnam is only 3000 and they run regularly if you get a hankering. I recommend Incheon as a viable option to the hurly burly ratrace...the partys where you bring it brother. |

How's Daejon recently? I remember going there once a year and a bit ago to see a ���� located near �ѹ��, and the bus ride back took a full hour due to construction of the subway. The bus was the fullest bus I've ever ridden on, ever. The windows were all fogged up too. I remember a high scholl girl writing with her finger on the window "�̰� ����ü ����~" (what the hell is this) to which I wrote on the window "�̰� �����̾�~" (this is reality) which made everybody laugh for a while and then I ended up chatting with the two girls standing next to me, which was a nice example of making lemonade from lemons I thought.
But when the subway's up I'd like to go there again. ����, back and forth on the subway is always a lot of fun. Daejon was a nice place and I see they have a Starbucks now too. |

Seoul is the best city in Korea.
However,
"Seoul's living standards are the worst among the world's 30 major cities." This phrase is found on the new government advertisement in the subways that emphasizes the need for relocating the administrative capital. This phrase was discovered Thursday and it is already creating controversy as people point out the promotional strategy spits in the face of the city. The ad cited material from Samsung Economic Research Institute (SERI). Seoul's competitive power is 30th among the world's major cities while Beijing is 17th and Mexico City is 18th. Only one of the global top 100 companies has its Northeast Asia headquarters in Seoul, while Hong Kong possesses 22, Singapore 21 and Beijing five. In addition, the ad consists of messages saying the economy is shrinking due to restrictions on foreign investment and foreign companies are avoiding Seoul.

It's been a while since I played the "My ex-pat friend's been here longer than your ex-pat friend" game, but here goes...
I know and have known (to wit, they're deceased now) Westerners who have been here since before the Peace Corps was even created (in 1961). Well before, as a matter of fact. And I get extra bonus points there for not including any of the Underwoods, the Adamses or the Lintons.
(Queen's Knight to King's Bishop two. Check and...)
As for myself, I fall somewhere between the last wave of the Peacenik Corps (early 1980s) and the tsunami of ESLers (mid-'90s to present?). |
Hey, I don't suppose that you've ever chatted up MysteriousDeltaRays on here? He seems quite humble about his tenure and seldom draws any reference to it on here, but I do recall that he's on his 16th year here, or soon to be, anyway. You guys may have crossed paths one time or another.

Frankly, I tend not to go to Starbucks because they are so much more expensive than other places for about the same quality! |
