Just curious--please inform this ignorant newbie: Have any of you actually seen or run into a real Russian prostitute on the streets of Seoul? (And if so, are they pretty hot?? Laughing )

From this future English teacher's armchair perspective, it all sounds so much like an urban myth, like 'death by fan'....

There were a lot in Pohell when I was there. They were the women that were in full makeup and Fifth Avenue clothing on Saturday afternoon. They never talked to anybody. They never smiled. They were beautiful, though.

Laura, if you have long blond hair and blow bubble gum, Korean men will assume you're "Russian." They did in Pohell anyway. I have long, blond hair and I always chew gum, but I'm not exactly thin, and the taxi drivers were always asking me "uh, are you Russian"? I always said no; I don't want to know what would have happened if I'd said yes.

One time I was standing on a sidewalk waiting for one of my friends and this guy approached me several times to go "see his apartment." The f*cker even started grabbing my arm. This all happened outside of a small grocery store, and the owner came to my rescue and chased the b*stard off after he heard me yelling at him.

So, a little word of advice: DO NOT be a smartass and say "yes." God only knows what kind of trouble you could get into. When it comes to sex, men aren't the lovable retards they seem to be. Even Korean men. Wink

I knew a blond NZ teacher a couple of years back who learned how to speak in Korean, "No, I'm not a Russian hooker and I think you're very rude".

She says it usually put their tails between their legs. It's all about communication.

If you're not actually being propositioned but just being stared at then, Welcome to Korea!!! We all get stared at!! Men and women. Even in Seoul.

Today, at the KINDERGARTEN where I work, I was asked if I was Russian by a repair guy. I was also asked if I was Russian once by a student at the Language Education Centre of a university. Do I really look that Russian? Or do these guys think that Russian is now being offered at universities and KINDERGARTENS? Seriously...

I no longer assume the worst when someone asks me if I'm Russian, however -- there are a lot of Russian brides here. However, when I'm asked, "How much?" in Korean I get pretty upset.

I wonder what would happen if I went up to a hot Russian girl and said "where are you from in Australia?"

This is pretty racist. Since when is it so bad to be Russian? Its a country with a long history and a far richer culture than your country, where you come from.

crawl back into your hole troll.

As for being asked if I'm russian. I get asked it reasonably reguarly especiallly in summer. I usually tell them that I teach their children. It's par for the course that if you're young, white, a woman and in particular blonde that you're going to attract this attention. Part of the deal of working here I suppose.

Im a troll for standing up for Russia but people who insult Russians as if its so bad to be one, are not trolls? Im not Russian. Would I be offended if I was aksed if Im from Moscow? No. Nor would I make a huge case out of it on a message board.

Because my dear troll when someone asks that they aren't actually asking you if you are russian but rather a politely asking you if you are a hooker. how do we know? Tone, body language. It also gives those men a rational to start treating you like a piece of property.

I don't want this thread to by hijacked by you again into another round of circular arguements. So quit trolling.

Im not trolling. But you must realize that not all Russians are hookers. As far as reading bodylanguage, are you an expert at it? Perhaps your own prejudices are clouding your judgement as to the intent of the passerby's questions. Something to consider.

It's the implication from the Korean men that is racist. Korean men will often size up a blond female as being Russian, before being western, as many Korean men know what kind of work that the thousands of Russian women do, who are being trafficked in here on E6 entertainment visas or on tourist visas.

Makes a great gift Cool

But maybe "I'm not a prostitute" instead.. or even "I'm not a Russian Prostitute"..

"I'm not a Russian" might be cruel to the many Russian students running around Seoul studying Korean and other programs who legit have nothing to do with prostitution.

This may be a bit too polite for some people's sentiments, but here it is:

ƴϿ þ ƴմϴ. .

Aniyo, na-neun Russia saram animnida. Ajosshi-neun baw-reu-shee eopsoyo.

No, I am not Russian. You, sir, have no manners.
