No, we're attacking the biggest "dong" in Daechi now -- it's just getting fun! Laughing Laughing

Actually, I'm envious of your Japan experience, Kenny. Even if you are planning to come back, I think it's way-cool you've been working there.

Since when did this become an anti DW thread? I dont think Ive ever bragged. People have asked me for my conditions, and Ive answered. The only places Ive "bragged" were threads that dealt with conditions we have. Anyway, I have a good job, but Im sure a few people here have better conditions than me.

I know Derreck has done a fair share of bragging about his 2.7 million.

It's not an anti-thread. Wink

We're just venting steam and having fun.

Wish I did make 2.7!!!

Hey Derrek, yeah it has been a good ride over here. I've been here since August 2003 as part of the JET Program (I know that I told you this in a PM before, but other folks may not know). JET is a great ride and is one of the cushiest jobs you'll ever come across. I'm mid-way through my second one-year contract, and I've already re-upped for the third (and maximum) contract year. Before JET, I taught for 1.5 years in a hagwon in Seoul.

Thing is, outside of JET the job prospects in Japan are pretty poor; a lot of towns are phasing out the JET program and going to private companies (i.e. pimps) that contract teachers out to towns and take a slice of their pay (like a pimp). I am directly employed by my town. There's another dude who works in the same schools that I do who works for a private company that contracts him out to my town. This guy was on JET for 3 years - 1.5 years longer than me - and his total compensation package is 33% less than mine. 33% less to do the same job - and he has more experience than me doing the same job! Would you take a 33% pay cut? I love Japan but not that much - thus, I'm thinking about coming back to Korea after my gig's up here.

The only bad part about my job is the team-teaching and the awful textbooks that we're chained to. Most of the Japanese Teachers of English lack creativity; they don't seem to realize that we can teach the required grammatical concepts using more interesting materials than our crap textbook. I've got three years' experience teaching EFL to students of all ages and abilities, but most of the time I'm a "human tape recorder" at work.

My hagwon job was definitely more stressful than my current position, but it was also infinitely more satisfying. I really enjoy teaching and want to help my students improve, and I can't do that in my current gig. I'm envious of you and what you're able to do at your school (I've seen your site), and I'd like to be able to do something like that - that's why I'd like to come back to Korea and teach high school after my time is up here.

Of course, it might be difficult coming back. I think I may have romanticized my Korea experience, just like I do with old relationships. I always tend to remember the good (the food, the cheap nightlife, the friends) and forget the bad (the rudeness, the staring, the rudeness, the pollution, the rudeness...). They say you can't go home again - I guess we'll see...

Kenny, are you coming back soon? My school didn't work things out with one of my co-workers, and they need someone ASAP if they decide to keep a 3rd foreigner on staff.
