North Korea Develops New Scud Missiles
North Korea has developed an upgraded Scud missile, dubbed the Scud-ER, with an estimated range of 600 - 1,000 kilometers. The missiles have a longer range and are more accurate than existing Scud missiles. A government source said Monday that U.S. spy satellites discovered the new Scuds one or two years ago, and were currently trying to determine whether they have been deployed. The missiles have longer ranges than North Korea's existing arsenal of 600 Scud B (300km) and Scud C (500km) missiles. They are also more accurate. The source said the missiles are capable of striking targets in nearly all of South Korea even from bases in rear areas of the North.

But the range of the new Scuds is considerably shorter than that of Pyongyang's arsenal of Rodong missiles (1,300km) and newly designed intermediate-range ballistic missiles (3,000 - 4,000km), which have already been deployed; its Taepodong-1 missile (2,500km), which was test-fired in 1998 but never deployed; and the Taepodong-2 missile (6,700km), which is currently under development. However, they are reportedly all aimed at Japan and the U.S. rather than South Korea.

The Scud upgrades, by contrast, were designed with South Korea in mind, and intelligence authorities believe they represent a greater threat than the long-range missiles.

Bah, unless they fly one, there's no way of knowing if it's a hoax or not.

People have been fooled before.

(The funniest thing about this is that it was a hoax so well planned that it still continues to fool people today. I've seen an interview with a former top Soviet engineer who claims that the missile in the parade was his crowning achievement because it was made of chicken-wire and cardboard (well, almost). He was particularly proud of the hydrolic support system that he had to design to give it an appearance of having some weight as it was carried across the square.)

South Korea keeps acting like a junior employee in a chaebol. I can't figure out why they don't play the hierarchy card. "We're your rich senior!" They have solid evidence North Korea kidnapped a South Korean minister and they barely raise a hue and cry. I mean the guy is probably being tortured every waking moment of his day... But lord an arab takes one of theirs in Iraq and there's hell to pay...

I wondered about this for a long time too. Then I realized that Roh and gang think Kim Jong Il's government is more legitimate.

The problem is that when and if they do, it may be too late to do something about it, especially if there is a nuke in its payload. Remember, they shot a missile over Japan in 2002. I personally don't trust the DPRK leadership as far as I can throw it.

Cheers

It's because this is all about MONEY.

They chaebols are in control of everything here, and they see NK as the richest money-farm they could even imagine. From cheap labor to tons of new Korean customers to sell stuff to, the Chaebols are all about making a positive impact for their company name in NK. For when the time comes, and they know it will eventually come, they want to be the first people blazing new trails into the Northern Kingdom. And they want all of those NK sub-leaders, who will still have localized power and control to some extent, to remember that company which gave them the free DVD Player and TV back in the day.

So when the dear leader says he needs some TVs and DVD Players, you can be that upper managers from a certain company starting with "S" or "L" will gladly bend over and let him go to town while watching that DVD on a new 62" DLP television.
