I just started my new board two days ago; the response is pretty good so far but it's not even close to the scope of this one. I would get somewhere between one to ten people online at one time, a few responses and posts, things are looking pretty good. But this morning I was looking at the admin and around 10am I decided to see who was doing what on my board. To my surprise there were seventy-five guests on the board at one time! None of them were members and they just ran about looking at this and that, and then it went down to fifty, then thirty, then back down to five like normal.
Who were they? Shocked Were they netizens scoping me out? They all had different IP addresses...to give an idea of how many seventy-five is, on this board right now we have a little bit over fifty, so seventy-five is a huge number for a two-day old board.
Do you suppose they go around in gangs looking for sites to click on and try to overload??

That was what I first thought, but it was so sudden and then went right back down. Usually a posting on a board like this brings a few dozen people, and the number stays for a few hours and then back down. This was over seventy people over twenty minutes, and then nothing.

The ironic thing is that "netizen" is supposed to have a positive connotation. These people in Korea which claim to be netizens are actually aspiring 'black hat' hackers. They are up to no good and therefore are not netizens.

So does anybody have any idea who those people were? I've never seen anything so sudden. Kind of reminded me of house-to-house searches done in Iraq where they break down the door and check the house out from top to bottom, then go on to the next. At least what I imagine them to be like...

Someone posted a link to your site. You can probably look at the stats and see where those people linked from. I can do that on my site, although I don't bother.

The post was probabably near the top on that other site, then worked its way down the list and off of the page -- just like Daves.

That'd be my guess.

Those are phantom users. PHPBB and Invisionboard started sending phantom users to the their boards about 5 months ago or so. They are not real people.

I think the purpose is to make your site look more active than it actually is.

My site board states:

Most users ever online was 64 on Sun Jan 23, 2005 6:59 pm

I know that is BS

Ah...that would make sense. I noticed that about ten of them were suposedly composing messages, but then after 'they' left the place was the same as before. Weird.

I just went over there and read that. Classic.

BTW - Good start on the board. I'm planning to join when I get on my computer at home.

Thanks. Razz For the time being I'm letting non-members post as well, but once I get to a certain number (haven't decided on the number yet) I'm going to change it so that only members can post. Registration still takes under a minute though. As of yet I can't afford to scare anyone away.
