Howdy folks, I got here several months ago. I'm from the US (west coast) and am a little homesick. Are people interested in getting together?

minjokmanseh:

Be sure to check out this thread:

These events are turning into somewhat regular happenings (every two months?). Come and make some friends. Don't worry about fitting in or "cliques" - we all barely know each other as it is, but the last one was a lot of fun. Newcomers are most welcome.

Hope we'll see you there!

Ahh, how sweet. "newbie seeks friends". Post up your picture and details along with hobbies and interests and I might think about it.
Do what i did when i first got here. Brave the bars of Itaewon and make casual conversation with people who look or sound interesting. Mind you there aren't many. However, the idea of mail ordering instant friends is a little pathetic to me.

If you were a little less obnoxious I might've considered posting my picture etc. - if I had any time left over after "mail ordering instant friends". Try posting without being rude.

Ok, minjomakseh, apologies for my knee jerk caustic remarks...! But i do stand by my opinion...
Its just funny how foreigners are generally unfriendly/wary when meeting other teachers on the streets here (real people in the flesh), yet will happily agree to setting up a weekend with complete strangers, cyber people they've never met before.
I've done things like this before, of course people aren't the angels they sometimes portray on internet, etc. I enjoy the exchange of opinions on here, but I personally probably wouldn't go out my way to meet someone socially who was a complete stranger and the only thing we had in common was being a teacher.
I arrived here last year knowing nobody. i'm proud to say i didn't post up ads for new mates but went about it (what I would cosider more bravely) by hanging out in bars or just being outgoing..it was always appreciated.

Rapier you sound like you have it made, good for you.

But your comments were a bit out of line. I'm generally a very outgoing person but, I hate just trolling the bars by myself looking for friends. Probably because I'm far more likely to get some creep trying feel me up then make friends. So for a newbie/someone with an attack of homesickness the social scene in seoul can be rather intimidating.

Yes, you need to be reasonably outgoing and just give it a go in order to survive in another country instead of sitting at pc bang advertising for friends. But the 'I'm so cool you should just get with the programme' attuide sucks.

I wouldn't troll bars in Itaewon. Are you in Korea to make western friends. One of the best things I ever did in my life was make Korean friends. There happen to be a lot of Korean people in this country conveniently. Get to know the real Korea. I'd be happy to make a new friend. I could show you a lot of the real Korea. How old are you? I'm from Oregon. PM me.
