|
|
Probably a dumb/repetitive question but I've gone through tons of posts in the FAQ's and didn't come across anything definitive on these items:
Advil
Peanut Butter
Bars (protien/granola)
Half and Half
Sugar substitute (sweet&low/splenda/equal)
Good salad dressings
Good coffee
Fruit jam (as in 100% fruit)
Sorry, some of these items are my vices... and if they aren't available, i'll be fine... just trying to gauge the landscape a bit.
Thanks. |

Advil- bring it
Peanut Butter Yes, available pretty much everywhere
Bars (protien/granola) Granola bars at Costco, never seen protein ones
Half and Half doubt it.
Sugar substitute (sweet&low/splenda/equal) Maybe, if you're near an army base/ goood black market shop
Good salad dressings Costco or blackmarket
Good coffee , Starbucks is gaining ground,
Fruit jam (as in 100% fruit) not sure, I get hommade stuff mailed to me. |

| I took a Survival Skill course and learned that, in the absence of half and half, it's possible to mix milk and cream oneself. It's risky, though, very dangerous. |

granola bars-Lg Mart, Homeplus
jam-it's not like homemade but you can find 100% real stuff at all the major stores
coffee-you can buy good ground coffee at all the major stores but it's gonna be about double what you would pay in North America. Starbucks is really popular and there are also other good coffee shops such as "Coobucks" and "Espresso in New York" ...some of the Starbucks alternatives suck but these two are good and the price is half that of Starbucks.
protein bars-I don't eat these but I'm sure I've seen them at pharmacies. |

| Advil is just Ibuprofen, isn't it? There is Ibuprofen in the pharmacies and if you go in with Ibuprofen written in English any pharmacist will know what to give you -- but note that each tablet contains twice the medecine of one advil. |

I may be the only person who dosent like "starbucks" coffee. If you like flavored coffee, bring it from home. You can get good coffee here (unflavored, except hazelnut) for at least double the price.
I have seen real fruit jam, but it is also double the price.
If you like extracts, bring them cause I only have seen vanilla at tripple the price.
extracts go a long way. a drop even makes instant coffee drinkable.
ANd half and half is like milk and heavy cream, it certainly isnt like milk and water. That (I think) is skim milk. |

No, Half and Half is milk and cream.
As far as coffee goes, I have been a coffee drinker since I was three years old (not lying). And before, I considered myself the snobbiest of the snobbiest when it came to coffee ("Starbucks? Feh! The McDonald's of coffee.")
And you know, it was a big adjustment, but I drink instant every morning now. It's just one thing I've had to sacrifice because getting ground coffee and finding a freakin' coffee pot and filters is just way too much trouble.
You'd be surprised by the things that you give up that you thought you couldn't live without. |

| Heavy cream... I have yet to find heavy cream in Korea.. every single carton I bought turned out to be single cream. Thin and difficult to thicken! |

Gotcha screen snarfing, my goal, haha.
About 100% fruit jam. I saw that pricey stuff imported from France at Lotte, not the usual Lotte but the fancy one. At the kiosk/area that has the foreign goods. Tall, slim jar; 3,000 or something like that.
I hope this helps someone get out of their jam, re; jam. |

| I get heavy cream in e-mart. It is so thick, I have made butter with the kids in school lots of times. Fill a jar 1/2 with cream. Shake it for about 15 minutes. The butter seperates and you have buttermilk, delicious butter milk, fat free. Then take the butter and mix it with salt, incredable. |

Most Korean jams are 50% sugar! |

Can't find good coffee and filters?? All the deparment stores have that stuff. At a price (not as much as you would think...a little more than home).
I drink 100% Colombian espresso made in an Italian espresso pot (stovetop style). Both coffee and pot are on sale in Costco cheap. You can get the same things in Hyundai dept store for a little more.
I'm finding excellent coffee beans in various places in Seoul all the time. My 20,000 grinder from Hyundai dept. store does a good job of grinding it just right.
I'm drinking better coffee in Korea than I did in Ireland. |
