I arrived in Korea in August 2004. Bought a laptop in October 2004. I will be leaving Korea in Feb 2005. Do I have to claim this or pay taxes on it? What if I bought it second hand from a person and not a store?

Thanks Smile

Nope. No taxes. You bought it in country. Whatever taxes there are you have already paid.

This is not entirely clear: claim what and where and from whom?

Maybe I didn't make it clear. I'm not too saavy when it comes to these things. I've heard that if I bought this laptop in Korea that I could charge up to 25-80% of the cost because of duty or something. I checked online and it says something like I can claim up to $750 without paying taxes or something. I just didn't know what to tell them about my laptop because it cost much more than the $750 , and i also have a digital camera that I bought here, but that doesn't worry me as much.

If someone can clear this up for me that would be great. I'm totally confused.

Who are you trying to claim with? And what for?

American Customs? American IRS? Canadian Customs? Korean Customs?

Give us the whole story, and we might be able to help you. Tell us exactly what you're doing, or trying to do.

I guess I am more mixed up than I thought. I am from Canada. I came to Korea in August 2004. I bought the laptop in Korea in October 2004. I taught English here since August and I am leaving on Saturday to go back to Canada for good. Someone told me that I had to claim (not sure who with, immigration or Canadian customs??) my laptop since I bought it here and hadn't stayed a year or something. That is the full story, not sure what else to say. I was under the assumption that a person could buy only so much while living abroad and than taking it back to Canada. ($750 was the amount I found online, not including liquor from what I was told).

I hope this helps.

Eh... Just stick it on... When was the last time you ever saw some questioned about these types of things?
