arhg. i'm so pissed off. i hate being dicked around by recruiters. sometimes this country really makes me angry. i've been waiting for the recruiter to get back to me on a job i had "100%" and now she's like, "well, they want you to work full time for the same money and there's no housing allowance anymore". and then she's like, "well i have these academy positions..." wtf is up with recruiters??????
on that note, if anyone has any suggestions for pubilc school jobs, i'd appreciate it greatly. |

absolutely, no fucking doubt, you are right on. recruiters just seem more and more like a joke to me each time. i got almost the same shit as you, talk on weds about a particular school for an interview on thurs, then on thurs i call up ready to go but she says instead there's this other school nearby why don't you go there, turns out it's a god damn fucking wonderland piece of X, had I known that name never would have gone. this kind of stuff seems endless. they constantly slide you this crap. and then they act all royal, not calling you up nor responding, etc.
these recruiters are awful. |

Recruiters in any field suck.
I had an IT recruiter get me to interview for a job. After interviewing, he told me I had the job, but they needed me there in two weeks. I quickly sold my house and moved my family across New York state to Albany. We moved into an apartment.
The first day of work arrived, and I called the recruiter to find out where to go.
"Oh, my mistake. They didn't hire you." |

But you got to experience Albany man. No one can take that away from you. Did you go to Crossgates at least? |

to a recruiter you are nothing more than a check to cash. Once cashed you are out of sight out of mind.
Sad but true |

Think about how many recruiters get confirmations from teachers who then back out, or whinge and whine and threaten to quit once they arrive because their apartment has a couple roaches or they have to go to extra meetings. Is it any wonder some treat us as disposable? |

I know what you mean about recruiters. Before I came, I contacted as many recruiters as I could to maximize my options.
Many never responded, and the ones that did would do exactly what you said they did....phone interviews, emails, then nothing.....
Finally, I found one, who was straight forward, and willing to give me all the info I needed. The first person who didn't sound like they were actually just telling me what I wanted to hear.....told me pos/neg...gave it to me straight.
Actually, I think he still may be hiring for some public school jobs for March/April...but I doubt it, as the new semester is starting. He will definitely be needing folks for Aug 2005. I highly recommend him...provides public school jobs, lots of vacay...one week orientation...settlement allowance...All that you could ever want. I am pretty sure though that he only hires Canadians....so if you are interested, here is his website.

Good luck in your search for recruiters otherwise, it's hit and miss for sure. |

Unfortunately, the good recruiters who have actual morals, like Stephanie at FTUnion, get disillusioned and fed up with the business and quit.
The con artists on the other, seem to thrive. |

So they arrive to a roach infested apartment which you blow off as 'oh its just a couple of roaches, no big deal" When you should say no problem we'll have an exterminator there asap.
Oh the crappy hogwan is telling us we have to attend weekly meetings that are unpaid, this wasnt mentioned before we arrived! Why not?
Do recruiters actually tell the hogwan up front they cant give people dirty infested apartments? Add on meetings that arent in the contract? The usual unreal and unmentioned demands?
What about recruiters that try to push low paying, long hour jobs on a teacher who agrees but then gets offered a job with more money and less hours....IMO they would be stupid to stick with the first job just because they agreed to.
Flush there goes another recruiter that got there money and never checked up on the teacher once they arrived! |

She quit?
When?
She lined me up with something last summer that didn't pan out becuase it was a huge mess. Not her fault, as she sort of helped out a friend by recruiting for them. It was supposedly connected with the University, but after that, she swore never to do something like that again.
I felt sort of sorry for her. |

Yeah, no one can take away the experience of living in Albany for a month--
Even though the experience led to me losing my house, most all my furniture, all my money, my career, and eventually, my marriage. |

Do teachers actually tell recruiters that they have no idea what they're getting into and just want to travel and party, and perhaps run away from their troubles back home? I'm just saying that it works both ways, not that either is right. |

Yu_Bum_suk is right on here. There are two sides to that recruiter coin.
I know a teacher who worked in Korea for a few years and is now running a reputable recruitment agency. He and his associate (also another teacher) are professional and do not con any teachers.
You would be surprised how many yahoos apply for work and never follow through when they are asked for proper documents (ex: a complete resume with references).
Also, the number of teachers applying to every recruiter under the sun, agreeing to any number of jobs (even going as far as signing a contract) and then wleching on the deal at the last second is suprisingly high.
Then there are the recent grads with zero experience who ask for the moon.
Just as there are many bad recruiters, there are legions of idiotic people who apply for teaching jobs in Korea and who see work as the last requisite for such a job. They seem to view it as a paid party.
When Yu_Bum_suk brought up the question of some teachers being unreasonable, he was also right on. The complaints come in many shapes and forms. More often then not, these complaints are unwarranted and come from an ignorance of the simple facts by the teacher. The "My apartment is not as big as my old one home" comes up often and is a perfect example of a dumb complaint borne out of ignorance.
The problems with many rectuiters is indeed that they are unprofessional and have no ethics. The flip side is that the good recruiters (there are many) get lumped in with the bad ones and that teachers who complain about recruiters do so from their personal perspective and do not seem to have the ability to imagine that recruiters have to deal with legions of yahoos.
The teacher I know who runs a recruitement agency now (in Canada) says that to place one teacher he has to go through about 8-10 idiots.
Do any of you realize how taxing that must be? |

Homer and Ye Bum Suk make good points. I guess I never really thought about it from the other side of the fence. Also from some of the more interesting(read crazy) people that I have met here I understand what they mean when they say 'yahoos'
I guess part of the biggest problem here is people dont talk about their good recruiters but boy oh boy will they tell you about the bad ones. |
