I was looking on a friend's Cyworld page just now and I noticed that somebody had left an anonymous note under one of her pictures saying he wanted to lick her breasts. What better time to see if I know how to trace an IP? I thought. The IP was 211.243.127.235 and I put it into www.network-tools.com whereupon the following information emerged:

Korea is notorious for having untrace-able IP addresses!

Apparently a lot of IP addresses are used more than once here in Korea, so my computer at home in the middle of the rice fields in Gyeonggi may have the same IP address as another one at my boyfriend's house in the heart of downtown Seoul.

Actually, I've even experienced this first hand! I wrote a message on a friend's cyworld without logging in and the IP address it said I had that day was completely different to what IP address it said I had when I did the same thing an hour later! I thought you're supposed to just have one unique IP address, but ...???!!!

The persons machine had some software even as simple as zonealarm that will "absord" sniff packets, making them a black hole for pings. Thus, a timed-out operation.

Or a proxy.

An IP trace these days is meaningles from a user-to-user trace point of view. There are too many programs that reject these packets or as I said, absord them, making a trace impossible. This, and as was said before, like many things in Korea, the net has grown so fast, it really is a mess to try and find the proverbial needle in the haystack. Additionally, ISPs have incorporated firewalls for this, as it's the same kind of activity that precursors aa hack. First, sniff out vulnerable machines, ones that return a ping packet, then move in.

The only good trace in this country would come from the actual logfiles of the ISP.

I have given up on traceroutes, lookups and IP sniffs....they just don't work anymore.

I just ran a trace for a site that was trying to scan my computer and got a lot of the same sites you hit mithridates.

Don't know what it means or if it helps.
