Sure the SBS program has kept this little storm in a teacup going for a while longer but it will go away if the media drops this issue. Koreans don't have a very long attention span when it comes to issues. |

It would not be a wholly bad thing for Korea to have a public debate about the ESL industry here. Massive amounts of money are poured into a largely unregulated industry for quite marginal results.
I would humbly suggest that a TV program seeking viewers is probably not the best place for that discussion. |

good point, there needs to be a close examination of both sides of the issue. If Koreans would 1) engage in honest business practices and 2) hire only qualified instructors then maybe the stuff we've been seeing wouldn't occur (like it occurs everywhere anyhow).
What are the odds of a program calling on Korean hogwons/unis airing? I think there is a better chance of the hockey lockout ending this week than that happening.
Face it until Koreans accept responsibility for their screw ups this thing ain't going to go away anytime soon |

At least it didn't make the top ten! These are the top ten search terms for Korean news sites. It's a relief that isn't in there. |

One-sided racist diatribe: nothing new to Korea. An article with an incriminating photo showing a western guy with a Korean girlfriend, wow, call the police.
If they want to expel me from Korea for such crimes as dating a Korean 30 year old, and putting up with cr*p from their bratty kids for years, they must get on with it, plenty of other countries need to learn English.
Somehow, we must have our say: theres no point sitting back, silence indicates guilt to Koreans. Get busy writing letters to the local papers etc..challenge the rubbish they print! Most of us work to hard and conscientiously, under their difficult conditions, to be labelled in this way.
However I don't trust the media here to give it to us at all- pandering to xenophobic insecurities sells a lot of papers here, journalists are far from responsible or even-handed.
I talked about it in a recent interview with the press here- which they have so far refused to publish of course.
I spoke about it to a korean recently online. She was convinced our jobs were easy, that we all got paid about 5 million a month, and that we're all players with 20 girlfriends apiece.
Koreans believe what they want to believe. Usually along the lines of them being innocent victims of some foreign conspiracy... |

All of this is just plain silly.
"We must quickly deport all those low-quality foreign English teachers who try to pick up girls near Hongik University or Apgujeong."
Who judges if they are low quality? Why only if they try to pick up women in those areas? So if they are low quailty and not going after Korean women then don't deport them?
How about you let the girls choose and make sure your hagwons hire good teachers ie not just judge them because they are good looking but ask the school for their qualifications and phone numbers of other parents to ask questions about the teacher before you enroll your child.
"...reveals that teachers at some language schools engage in sexual relations with middle and high school students and offer their students marijuana."
How many arrests have there been for teachers having sex with children? How many marijuana arrests have there been that can be attributed to giving it out to students? While I do not smoke, I will be damned if I am going to give it out to my students (if I was teaching) when it costs as much as it does over here and have a greater chance of getting caught as I am putting it out in the open in a society that cannot refrain from gossiping.
"I think only 5 percent of foreign English teachers in Korea are qualified,"
Does this person consider themselves to be part of the 5%???? |

According to that article:
Quote: |
Immediately after the broadcast, the bulletin board on the program's website was flooded with over 1,000 furious posts. |
That's down from the 6,000 netizens that cared enough to sign a petition about this last month, when the issue first broke out. I think it's fair to say that the issue is losing steam, as most hot issues tend to do in Korea, over time. And what's this been, only a month or so?
PS, Don't think that no one noticed how quiet this board was on this issue for the 3-4 weeks in between programs. Not even a peep about feeling uncomfortable in public. Funny how this board mirrors the attention-span of the Korean media. Must be emulation or something. |

That, or the report's shrill alarmism worked on the wrong targets.
Funny thing, my boss asked me about it today. I told him I've just been reading second and third hand reports on the web. He said, and I quote, "Foreigners having sex with Koreans? Who gives a *beep*?"
Not that I'm claiming this anecdotal evidence as proof of a prevailing mood in Korean culture... Or even meaning that every single last Korean, including the lovers, husbands, and wives of a number of posters here are exactly like my boss just because they're all Korean.
I mean, who would be dumb enough to do that? |

Sorry, but I don't follow your reasoning here. The 6,000 figure you refer to was as a result of a campaign over a period of time to obtain signatures on a petition. The 1,000 figure was achieved immediately following a program broadcast at 10:55 pm.
Your "losing steam" theory is based on an inference on your part that makes no sense. |

Does your boss publish newspapers or produce TV programs? If not then his opinions dont matter much. But the newspapers and the TV programs make opinions - that is the problem. |
