I used to cheat in the past, but when I completed a game it didn't feel right. Now, I use walkthroughs and maps.
What about you guys?

If the game gets too frustrating, I start using walkthroughs. If that doesn't work, I cheat.

I play a lot of games with stories, so I'm more interested in the story itself than overpowering the boss at an impossible level.

I voted no. However, when I have finished the game (I always start to play on the hardest level), I find the cheats and have some fun.

A walkthorugh is a guide. It helps you with those spots in a game where you honestly don't know what to do next/how to beat the boss/ how to breform the super fatality/etc. They are basically like those prima strategy guides that are sold everwhere

When it was still possible, I levelled several characters to level 90 or better in Diablo with the map hack (it allows you to see the entire map without visiting every little nook and cranny and to see which items are valuable or not when they fall from a kill). That being said, my last rockin character died last year sometime and I don't have the patience to start again and build another good character with good items without maphack as it is just to slow and boring to do so.

Sorry for my lack of commas, I'm feeling lazy to edit my posts tonight.

Yeah, a game like Diablo 2 is not really fun when I cheat on it. It's like playing SimCity and having the perfect city already built.

I also use cheats to measure how good a game really is. If the root of the gameplay is just how difficult it is, it's just not a game for me. But if I'm able to still have fun with a game with the cheats turned on or off (like "No One Lives Forever" and "Warcraft III"), then it's a sign that there's something deeper to the game than testing someone's reflexes, what I call the "Twitch Factor."

I use cheats when the game isn't very interesting and I just want to get through it (like Doom3, which was a bore, the graphics were terrible, and it was nearly impossible without using the cheats). I also use cheats when it's a strategy game. I think a bit of extra cash for buying things sometimes enhances the game play. Half Life 2, on the other hand, was great. Didn't cheat on that one. I wanted to enjoy every second of it at it's fullest. I never cheat when I play online, though.

Though cheating is fun when your playing a game that is offline, ie. against the computer, it is downright dumd when playing one inline.
A few years back I was happy to play Counterstrike, it was a game full of challenge since you were up against real people.
Soon the cheats came out.
You could see through walls, and have auto-aim on.
Soon the game was ruined only to have to comeout with a stringer punkbuster.

Offine, sure. Online never.

Do I sense that you disagree with my evaluation of Doom3? Or maybe you're fishing for a newbie who doesn't know the limitations of his system? (Don't worry, this old gamer has learned a trick of two since his first contact with computer in the early 70s (my dad's laboratory's IBM mainframe)). In any case, my system isn't as good as I'd wish, but good enough to run Doom3 at the highest resolution. I just wasn't impressed with the game. They wasted too much time on shadows and not enough on textures. Half Life 2 is far superior, in my opinion.

Doom3 was a playable tech demo IMHO. It usually is with most of id's games. The engine is laid for other games to step up and use it in an innovative way.

One of the few exceptions was Quake1 Quakeworld (which was a TCP/IP mod anyway) and Quake3, which also needed the RocketArena mod to bring the best out of it in terms of gameplay. Those in the know will see that the popular Half-Life engine was a revised version of the Q1 engine, much like the Enemy Territory engine is a heavily tweaked Q3/RTCW engine. Call of Duty and Medal of Honour all use revised versions of the Q3 engine.

Q2 was a steaming pile of faecal matter that was only good due to Soldier of Fortune many moons later.

Doom3 is much the same. Damn pretty, but in the end, it's going to be the other game developers who are really going to push the technology and the story into something which is more deserving.

My 2c. :)

jae.

It was a valid question when it comes to Doom3. Anyways, through your answer, I found no answer.

Comparing HL2 to D3 is meaningless on every level except gameplay.
