'pon Bulsajo's recommendation, I bought 'Streetcore' and it is the utter schit. Joe Strummer was a brilliant songwriter, street preacher and musician. Brilliant. I'm bloody angry that he died as we need him more than ever. My only regret - I never saw the man play in person. Did you?

Why?

Hey deffo, that was your first post, right? Rolling Eyes Congratulations and a big warm welcome. Glad you finally worked up the courage to type something, sister. Dave's esl cafe needs more female posters to balance out the board a bit.

Happy to report 'yes'. I saw the Clash live before they broke up, and spent a night drinking with Joe in a blues club in Brussels back in 1989.

Thanx for the heads up on Streetcore, Bulsajo. I know there's more available. Is there anything of quality live by Joe or The Clash that you know of? Never released a "live" album as such did they?

London Calling has been remastered and re-released just recently- I believe there are some bonus tracks, and furthermore I believe that some of them may be live (but of course I may be 'proven' to be wrong).

EDIT: Looks like I'm wrong- demos and videos (but the videos might have live concert footage...). And check it out! It gets 100 outr of 100 on Metacritic! First time I've seen something like THAT!

I'll have to look into that, thanks for the recommendation.
As ususal, my current recommendation remains Ted Leo.

So what was it like to meet him? What were you doing there? What kind of bloke was he? The interviews on 'Westway To The World' reveal an articulate, well-informed fella with a great sense of ha ha.

Saw the Clash on their final "Out of Control" tour in 84. Saw Joe a couple of times in Toronto with the Mescaleros. By coincidence, two days ago I was browsing in a bookstore and came across a biography of Joe titled "Let Fury have the Hour".

As for the live Clash material, there is at least 1 cd of all live material. It has a street sign on the front that says The Clash as far as I recall. I prefered the studio tracks for the most part.

It's a long story, but to sum it up in a nutshell he was keeping a low profile and I didn't realize who he was until the next day (Just as well, or I probably would have made a fool of myself. Embarassed).
He went by 'Joseph', said he was in a band and in town to play a gig, and he looked more like a short black-haired Brian Setzer than anyone else...

I broke a bouncer's nose and tore the bars off a window while breaking into the PNE Forum to see Joe Strummer sing for the Pogues.

Great. (Is that title from one of Joe's songs?) The only thing I've read about any Clash members was a thin magazine of photos with text as big as a Dr Seuss reader, as well as some sections in books on the Pistols and John Lydon's "No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs".

Got a title? I've never heard of it.

Let Fury have the hour, Anger can be power, do you know that you can use it?

--The Clash, "Clampdown"

That live album is from their US Tour, it is indeed a pic of a big road sign.

Ah, Clampdown. Song's in my head now. Do you really think that listening to a song gets it off yer mind? I always had Sean Flynn in my head every time I went outside of Seoul. Clash makes great urban transit music. Walk, bus, subway, highway. Traintrack, elevator, riverbarge, anyway.
