|
|
I'm having problems with Firefox 1.0, and they're so bad I think I'm going to ditch it if I can't get them resolved.
Anyone else having problems?
My big gripes are:
It's pretty friggin slow at loading pages- it's like I was back on 28.8 dial up modem or something. I've installed the usual plug ins and extensions to make things run smoother/faster, and I've applied the 'speed tweak' that's out there- but it hasn't made a difference: slow as molasses, especially on images.
Images/icons are not showing up or showing up wrong. On some sites the images are stretched out or blurry (fine, not every site is configured to look nice on Firefox, I understand that), and on Php boards (such as this one) the buttons, icons and emoticons are screwed up- Rolling Eyes sometimes appears as a PM button, the 'post a new topic button' looks like an 'info' triangle (but this post is a testament to the fact that in spite of its looks it does indeed still allow me to create a new topic) and 'shocked' emoticon looks like 'embarrassed', but so does 'embarrassed', thus giving me 2 options for 'embarrassed' and zero options for 'shocked'. And let me tell you, I get shocked a lot so I'm finding this to be very annoying.
Any advice? Anyone else packed Firefox in and gone to a different browser? |

Must just be you. I run firefox and have none of the problems you've described. I sometimes don't get a page, or part of a page to load, because it's not compatible with Firefox, but none of the slowness or bad images you say.
Oh well.

I think you've just had a bad install or something. I've had no problems with firefox at all. Have tried re-installing it? or perhaps it's time for a fresh install of windows - that may clear up everything. |

I wouldn't exactly say that it is time for a fresh install of windows... this sort of advice should be given out only as a last resort.
OP, why don't you try reinstalling Firefox, clearing your caches, and unchecking the option for 'preloading' pages? I think this would be a better place to start. Also, have you considered that maybe your machine is having an allergic reaction to one of the plugins/extensions you installed for Firefox? |
while I totally agree with the caution on reinstalling windows, reinstalling FIrefox may not solve your problems unless you also delete the folders for Mozilla in your Document and Settings folder under Windows for the user you have Firefox installed under. If you don't do that, the 'fresh' install will simply use all the info in there to set up Firefox again which will leave you back where you started.
In any case, I'd say something on your system is pretty screwed. In fact, it reminds me of a virus I've seen where icons were gradually replaced by random images which got worse with every reboot.
I've been running firefox for over a year without any of your issues and the only thing I can think of is sometimes, extensions for Firefox, as it's open source, can come from anywhere and not be 'signed' It may well be that you've installed a crippled extension which is making the main browser buggy. Try uninstalling these or go into that Mozilla folder in your Doc and Settings folder and manually delete that particular extension's folder to force it to uninstall if the first option doesn't work. I've had issues uninstalling extensions which tell me they will uninstall once I restart Firefox but don't. |

My comment on a fresh windows install was more of a question. Bulsajo is a well-known computer geek and should be able to judge when it is time to do that. I would never give that advice to a technotard. |

I use firefox and I'm finding it a little slow right now, but it 's still faster than IE. |

It runs a lot faster on my mac (slower processor, more RAM, same connection) than my PC. |

I had originally noticed the slowness when comparing it to IE; When it seemed slow I'd fire up IE and visit the same pages and they loaded noticeably faster. But it could have been IE's cache... That still didn't explain the image/icon problem though.
So I've been busy and away from the home computer for a couple of days, but when I get back I find everything has gone down connection-wise: no email, no browser capability from either machine on the LAN, but both can still find each other. This seems to happen once or twice a year. I turn off the DSL modem, unplug the router, and wait 5 min. Turn everything back on and it's fine. I don't know whether it's the router and/or modem overheating, or some issue at the ISP's end, but whatever- it always works. This time I went through the same drill, and now everything works, INCLUDING Firefox- it's humming along nicely and all images/icons are as they should be. |

well that would have reset your IP no? and perhaps whatever is glitching your system is something locked on to your IP? Just a hunch... |

The answer to my Firefox image problems was disturbingly simple and embarrassing- I'll write it off as getting used to a new GUI and options/settings menus....
I simply had to click 'reload current' page and everything came up roses. |

Time to update: 1.0.1 is out now.
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
Quote: |
Firefox 1.0.1, addresses numerous security vulnerabilities and approximately 40 other browser fixes, according to the not-for-profit software foundation.
The primary glitch, which the updated browser fixed, was a vulnerability found in the Internalized Domain Names (IDN) protocol, which allows the use of certain international characters that look like other commonly used characters.
The IDN vulnerability allows hackers to spoof Web sites through phishing attacks. |

Firefox won't be suitable for many financial-related websites because it isn't compatible with Active-X.
I love it. The virus problems have disappeared. I just crank up IE whenever I need to access my bank account. |
