What exactly do people mean by their employer(s) forcing them to work illegally? Working at another place of work, or for a business partner of theirs?

A major crackdown would in the end only help the job market for people working legally - imagine being a fruit picker in America if they made all the illegal immigrants leave.

MBC news report this morning reported that 60 esl teachers were busted in Ilsan and other citeis near Seoul. They either had fake degrees or were doing private tutoring on an E2 visa.

I wonder how they could find out they had fake degrees in the last 4 days since that SBS report was broadcast? Shocked

Interesting. Actually MBC did the first broadcast very late January on the last Sunday (Jan 30th).

Anyways, links?

Yes, their employers are illegally farming them out to other schools and skimming a profit.

And yes, busting the illegals will only help us legal folks.

Gollum,

The procedure for busting an illegal teacher is as follows (this from a few teacher who were busted since I got here in 1997 who I have been in contact with).

1- They arrest you.
2- They fine you and deport you.

If you can't pay the fine, they have a right (often exercised) to hold you until you do. They do not just "let you go" if you pay up either. They deport you out of here.

As for the crackdown in Busan, it was full on (might still be). We had immigration come to our school and to several other schools I know. They also visited recruiters. Several teachers here were busted, fined and deported. I know of a couple of teachers who were sent packing as their friends. Not friends but I knew them by face.

This is not a thoughrough campaign but it is much more sustained then any I have seen in my almost 8 years here.

It depends on how you are illegal. If you're on a tourist visa, what you've said is true. However, if you're on an E2 but being farmed out, then technically, your boss must pay your fine for you (as a condition of sponsoring you for the visa, he agrees to take responsibility for you as well).

I would imagine that immigration's enforcment policy is 'the deterent' factor for privates.

They know that they aren't going to catch everyone, but they sure as hell want to catch enough to make people think twice about doing it.

Of course that drives the price of them up, so more people enter thus they go back on a 'crackdown.'

In the end teaching privates are like taking illegal drugs it's a personal decision for all of us to make whether we do it or not it. I don't because of the personal and legal consquences, but for someone else they may figure that the risk/payoff is worth it.

The one thing that annoys me is that immigration doesn't have anywhere a document in clear english of the rights/responsbilities for those of us here on E2s. Personally I think that everyone issued with that visa should get a copy of the rules governing this visa since immigration has a whole lot of nitpicky stuff you can get fined on (informing them of changes in address, renewing your passport) as well as the big stuff like doing privates and getting farmed out.

I hate to think of how many teachers (myself included) who were placed in illegal situations due to a misplaced trust in the directors to follow immigration policy. Ulimtatly it's us who will lose not just our job and home but have to leave country.

Drugs are harmful. Besides if you got the right blood privates are not even illegal.

And it's about as effective as capital punishment being a deterrent to murder.

Bozo...on an E-2 if you teach pvts on your own (i.e. to pvt students without your employers knowledge)...they fine you and deport you.

Your employer might also have to pay a fine but when you get busted, you pay and get sent out of here.

Yes, I realize that. Which is why I said "technically".

And how does Imm know it's without the boss's knowledge, anyway?

Whether or not it's with the boss's knowledge, you will be fined and likely deported. This has no bearing on your punishment. Period. All the boss has to anyway is deny all knowledge of such privates.

Of course, you'll be deported; that's not in dispute. But the boss will be fined, too (although, knowledge or not, he should pay yours too-- I know, I know, what law says is not how reality always works; Imm is a law unto themselves; etc, etc....)
