How about:

Damascus, Timbuktu or Everglades City? Where would you like to live next? I like the heat, but I am afraid my girlfriend won't want to go.

(a one and a two and...)

Fairness from Korean media??? is what you expect!! HAHAHAAHHAA!!

How long you been here!!

Koreans get the media slant they want!!!
Because it SELLS ADS!!!

And anyone can tell you those TV talents, they have to demonstrate their REAL TALENT to the studio bosses before they get anywhere near a camera!!
My actor and actress friends can tell you that and more!! MUCH MORE!

HAHAAHAAAHHHAA!!

(that's too easy, I know)

Oh screw it. You're all too fast. You all guessed TB, and Corporal already did my "imposter"...

But I have a question. There are "socks" and "trolls" ... but what do you call posters who aren't socks of regular posters, and they're not trolling, exactly. They have a persona, but it's somehow not quite right. Do you call them "imposters"? Seems a bit harsh, but...

For instance, posters I think I'd have to see before I "buy the act" are Harin and Gunshake. Two of the most un-Korean-sounding "Koreans" I've ever come across on or off-line.

I buy Harin, and Gunshake looks to take the extra time to lay it out right, and tweak it with thesaurus-support, but the overall command of an advanced speaker appears to be there. There are a good chunk of Koreans out there that have made the most of their English language education and overseas exposure. You can come across many in the english chatrooms of Sayclub. I don't think it's a stretch that a few have made their way over here.

Harin you'd buy, huh? Well, we clearly hang with different k-crowds. Were it HK or Taiwan... or even Japan, then I'd be less hesitant, because I know women like that from those places. Maybe I'd buy "2nd gen gyopo", but that's about it.

Gunshake... that's a harder call. Like arranged clues at a crime scene, the "mistakes" in grammar or syntax or idiom seem almost orchestrated to maintain the storyline.

I didn't read that stuff, but I note the strong and painstaking emphasis in drafting a post on an english forum, and trying to butter it up with some TOEIC vocab to wax hifalutin, resonates like a well-educated and travelled Korean male that wants to make extra sure they don't come off as a language slouch on here, given the way that there are some inflammatory posters here who can come across as condescending to all things Korean, and in particular, their english proficiency (not referencing you here, btw).

Oh, absolutely. If these two posters are exactly what they claim -- speakers of English as a foreign/second language -- then my hat goes off to them both. My doubts can only come as high praise on their uncommon levels of proficiency. (Though it wasn't just proficiency that aroused my doubts; it was as much other things. Content, manner, attitude... je ne sais quoi.)

And yes, it would be grossly unfair if the genuine native English speakers here (so many of whom misspell and drop punctuation like crazy) were to criticise Koreans for making mistakes.

I don't normally have a suspicious mind about these sorts of things, and may indeed be one of the most gullible people in cyberspace, or at least on Dave's. Which is why my doubts in these two cases come as a surprise even to myself. Again, I really do tend to take everyone and what they say at face value, which in itself isn't always a good thing, but what can you do? I didn't even know I had a -- what do you call it? a "BS detector"? -- until now. But hell, the damn thing's probably defective anyway. Wink

dear jongroguru,

i will take your comment as a compliment. Very Happy i am sick and tired of saying this, but YES i am indeed korean w/ two X chromosomes. feel free to stop by my cyworld anytime. if your korean is decent, you'd be able to see all the comments left by my highschool and college friends.

yes, i went to high school and college in korea. i left korea to transfer to another college in the states when i was in my junior year. the funny thing is i could speak english very well even when i was a highschool kid.

the strange thing is that my english doesn't impress my fellow koreans anymore.

it's been like this......

when i was a highschool kid: "wow, which highschool do you go to? any private lessons??????"

when i was in college: "oh.....your english must be good because you're majoring in eng lit, but your english is still impressive! good for you"

when i came to america: "you just got here? AND you were told that you don't have to take any ESL classes? man....which college did you go to in korea? any private lessons?"

after living here over 8 years: well, you've been here long enough... of course your english is good.

no big deal.....

glad to know that i can still shock people. Wink

now..i am NOT going to apologize for my 'manner and attitude'. i've always been this way and i am proud of it. it's ME. why do you think i can't date korean boys? they think i am weird. Embarassed

I've got an idea for anyone who still thinks Harin is a charlatan. Get your Korean associate, friend or partner to post something in English on a thread. We can all make comments on how it couldn't possibly be a Korean as they've attained fluency in another language. Let's see how many of them we can offend and patronise about their 'English level'. If you don't know someone whose English is "good enough" for us to judge them easily, forget about it. Confused

I myself grew up in Australia, but I have managed to learn a thing or two along life's path too and can string a fa-fa-few words together in English when need arises. When I first started posting here, nobody could believe that I wasn't Canadian. It's true, Uma.

How about:

Sure Bush condoned torture, rape and genocide. And the administration planned and executed the September 11th disaster. And the CIA actually created the tsunami, and bird flu is actually the creation of the U.S. government,

But Saddam would do much worse!

You wouldn't have to read the Current Events board very often to figure that one out.

Yeah, Harin's Korean. And a girl.

My next imitation is an interesting one.

That's why you loopy libs don't get to run things back home. The loopy libness has gone to your head and makes you all loopy.

Thank you for your response. I see where you're coming from with regards to providing an equal opportunity for everyone; however, I am of the opinion that giving everyone an equal opportunity should not the the responsibility of the government but rather...

For all the crap and suspicion harin has had hurled her way since starting to post, I'd say she's amazingly gracious and good-natured.

Loopy libs? Wannago, Hank, Derrek, Gollum or Joo. If I hadn't atually met Derrek, I would think they are all the same person.

Ok, here's mine:

You're all a bunch of liars! Lalala, I can't hear you! Korean men are angels that walk among us! As if all of you don't beat your wives! If you tell me one more time that a Korean man so much as jaywalked I'm going to tell my husband! And watch out for Harin! She's a gay Nazi alien transvestite hooker with AIDS!
