CLG is dead on about a majority of the guys here.
She left out one other style: The ESL prima donna. These are the guys who think they are Gods gift to ESL teaching and that they are going to single handedly going to make all of Korea speak perfect English. They have egos the size of the World Cup Stadium in Seoul and god forbid you suggest they do something differently or you don't follow their methodology. I have run into these people several times and all I want to do is slap these people. IMHO these guys do more damage to the teaching profession than some of the drunks and social misfits here. |

I talked to my Korean friend last night and she happened to bring up that program. She said that she was so embarassed for Korean people because they don't take the time to check out foreign teachers in their children's schools. She also had a lot of sympathy for the Kyopo who couldn't find work here. She feels that Koreans place too much value on "looks" and not enough on substance. And I have to agree with her!!
We agreed that the only way that things will change is when parents start demanding accountability from hagwons and not just the "fake" phone calls and report cards!! We all know that this happens: "Oh! Little Ho Young is doing WONDERFULLY in class!!! His English is excellent!" When we know that Little Ho Young is a pain in the beep and doesn't even know how to write his name!
Some day (maybe only in my dreams!) there will be some kind of standards for hagwons...and for foreign teachers, besides a diploma, a birth certificate with a young age and a white face! |

The president of Korea also believes 'good looks' makes for a better President. Check his quote about Clinton. And don't forget this man just had his eyes done.

Mr. Roh praised Mr. Clinton saying that his thoughts greatly influenced young Koreans in the 1990s. "Furthermore, you are handsome and good on the saxophone," Mr. Roh said.

They did it again, didn't they? Today is Sunday, February 27th. I don't have a TV but I was told that there was another show last night on SBS focussing mainly on drug use by Brits, Canadians and Americans here. Who saw it? Was it the same program again, are other shows picking this story up? Hmmm. |

Wouldn't the real report cards have to start in the public schools? I know at the elementary school level there's no grading for English at all. Makes my job both easier and harder. |

I take strong issue with your statement weatherman. I can't believe that you have actually been involved with a Korean family here for any amount of time longer than 10 minutes. Family here in Korea is stronger than in the West, to the point of extreme sacrifice on the parts of all the members. One person's worries are every family member's worries. |

I take strong issue with you being blindsighted by Korean propaganda. Your writing almost suggests you are making some kind of joke. |

My wife's family - six siblings - is the same. A problem for one is a problem for all. Family "meeting" is held to discuss and decide what to do. Nothing comes before the family. And with 6, there are quite a few such meetings.
On a related issue, my wife is the second oldest and should defer to her older brother. I take her rank (2) in the hierarchy and even though I am older than he, I call him him hyong-nim - he loves it. |

Thank you . Six is quite big. My wife's family only has four, and that's alot of excrement hitting the air conditioning all at once, when it comes to problems. |

"Hollywoodaction" I'm interested in the article you mentioned. Has the guy written anything else, and how would I find the article. Is it too big to post, or maybe there is a link to it. |

That SIT theory is used by some people to explain the developement of cults and and radicale groups and what have you. The "in group" and the non group are emphasized by cult members to give themselves importance, a sense of superiority and a sense of belonging. Their whole identity is tied up with being a member of the in group. Members behave so as to show their identity with the in group, and are ever mindful of not sullying the good name of the in group.
It's a theory to describe the developement of prejudice as well.
The Korean personality is very prone to being swayed by cult like charismatic leaders who would unconsciously employ SIT theory to build up a band of followers. People generally have a need to obey and follow authority and be part of a group. The Koreans have a stronger need because Korean culture is hierarchical anyway. They don't look at political decisions rationally, nor do they question the validity of the decision. They act on their emotions, because they haven't developed the means to participate rationally with debate and question and answer sessions. |

Have to agree with both of you.
Waeguks can be a pain to socialise with here..Koreans often give me much more of a lift.
Plenty of bad behavior types found in the westerner population here. |
