US Inmates' Get Preferential Treatment in Local Prison
Six U.S. soldiers detained in a Korean prison are receiving preferential treatment in individual cells furnished with televisions, desks and beds, according to a U.S. military newspaper. The newspaper reported that six U.S. service members are currently detained at the Cheonan Juvenile Correctional Institute in Chonan, South Chungchong Province.

They do not perform the labor assigned to Korean adult inmates convicted of serious offenses. U.S. Forces Korea also supplies them with food. They cook food for themselves in their communal kitchen. They are given vegetables, fruit, meat and condiments. Their 72-square-foot cell contains a bed, desk, chair, television and books.

"We feel dislocated... disconnected from everything that we are familiar with. We are not at home. Our units have basically abandoned us. The distance from the U.S. to Korea is so great that family members cannot afford to travel here," the Los Angeles native was quoted as saying.

In five years, his family visited him only once two years ago for two hours.

The inmate, who is studying for his master's degree in theology from a U.S. seminary, also reportedly said his time in a South Korean prison would never leave him. "It is part of who I am. Hopefully, it will make me stronger and wiser," he was quoted as saying.

Evil Americans. No matter what, how, when, why and who...it's always the evil Americans fault...just repeat to yourself...Americans equal evil....say it enough, and you'll fall in line with the rest of us.

The benefits of SOFA--I hope they appreciate it.

Perhaps not.

Yeah this was the bit I didn't like- if I remember rightly the guy was convicted of dealing cocaine, got a 5 year sentence (?), has food shipped in to him (God forbid he should have to eat korean food in a korean prison), and was bitching from his communal kitchen that the USFK had abandoned him. What would you like them to do exactly? Provide a buddy system? Send Kid Rock round to sing a couple of songs?

Good thing he didn't get busted in Thailand. He'd no longer be with us.

Inmate 1: So, what are you gonna do when you get out?
Inmate 2: I got a job lined up at a church when I get out. Wink
Perhaps background checks should be mandatory for priests. Wink

Perhaps background checks should be mandatory for EFL Instructors.

Besides the food issue, I am sure it is for their own protection. If Korean prisons are one tenth as bad as they are in the US, there is good reason.

Koreans in prison in the states have more "buddies" to gang up with. I am sure that there are Asian gangs there, not just Korean or Chinese ones. Since there are only five in the Korean prison, they would easily get their ass kicked every day if in general population.

I am not saying that these guys do not deserve a good ass kicking. Dunno the answer to that one. But if a bunch of Americans start getting killed in Korean prisons by other inmates....international incident.

Could you imagine being the only black guy in a white prison or vice versa?
