|
|
I'm looking for a digital camera around the w300,000 price mark, preferably as small as possible and robust enough to withstand my grubby hands. Brand name is not important, but the following are:
4.0 megapixels minimum, the higher the better
At least 3x optical zoom
Enough memory to hold a couple of hundred pics of good quality
Good battery life / multiple power sources
Software that I have a fighting chance of being allowed to use in a PC bang, and that has some English (ѱ )
Oh, and would it be worth going to Yongsan to get a good deal (I live in Incheon), or just check out my local department store?
Thanks in advance. |

No. Online is cheaper (usually). See below. Yongsan's forte is computers and related parts. It's not so great price-wise for consumer electronics.

Even bigger no. Korean department stores operate in an economic Bizarro World, where the higher they crank up the markup, the greater the demand is. Many Koreans, for some weird nouveau-riche status-based reason, are eager to pay 3x for something from Shinsaegae just to be seen buying at Shinsaegae. Maybe they like the little bags.
Have a look at www.omi.co.kr , if your Korean-reading skills are ok. It will point you to the cheapest on-line prices in the country. These are usually lower than Yongsan prices.
I've bought my last two digital cameras through Omi-listed vendors, with no problems. The most recent was two weeks ago - an Olympus C310-Z (3MP, 3X zoom, nicely sized) for my wife to take snapshots with, for about 180,000w.
Have a good look at this one. Pentax Optio S4, 220,000 to 500,000, depending on who you buy it from. |

I was in yongsan last week and I saw digital cameras 5x zoom 5megapixel for less than 350,000 won. YOu can find what you are looking for.
I bought a camcorder there and the model I bought was 100,000 won more expensive on the website that the lemon listed so I would have to say that online is not always cheaper |

Danawa delivers if you have a friend who can speak Korean. Find what you want and call the store. Deposit the money in their account and wait overnight. |

Video products, including camcorders, are an entirely different animal from digital cameras. They're also a generally poor deal anywhere in Korea, compared to US stores like Wal-Mart and Best Buy, as are VCRs and DVD players. I bought a JVC digital camcorder with a 16x zoom (GR-D33) at a US Best Buy for $299 a year ago - no price in Korea, online or (I assume) not, can beat that, even a year later. |

Canon IXY The new ones are 5.0 megapixels, they're Canon (despite that some might say it doesn't matter, buy a digital camera from a camera company, they know lenses and exposures etc.). I got mine at Yongsan for 270,000 (499,000 at E-Mart).
When I bought mine last year they were 4.0 megapixels and were the world's smallest 4 mp cameras. It's GREAT for taking everywhere with you. Highly recommended!
Check out some reviews. Search for the SD10 'cuz that's what it's called in North America so it's easier to find English review sites. |

Oops, sorry, didn't read your bit about optical zoom. No optical zoom on the IXY (its only real drawback). I use it for snapshots mostly and at the highest resolution it's plenty fine to use Photoshop to crop etc to get a nice print without a real zoom. |
