Choosing our own housing this time around. We will be working in Gangnam. Our employer will pay the chunsee or wolsee, whatever it is.
What should we expect to pay for a Western Bath, 1 bedroom? Will we even be able to find a Western bath? A co-worker said that would be difficult, but we had 2 Western baths in our last place.
Thanks. |

I found my own place this time around and none the places I looked at had a western style bath, they might be out there but I haven't seen 'em.
Expect to pay about a half million for a decent place in gangnam. |

Half a million is probably like the minimum. Mines twice that with a sizeable key money deposit too (30 mil). No bathtub though |

Yeah, preferably a bathtub, but at least an enclosed shower or enclosable shower...not the hose on the toilet shenanigan(sp?)...not that there's anything wrong with that... |

Really? Dont worry, I get plenty of compensation from my school. It just so happens that I get just about that much for housing allowance:) |

You're working at a public school right?
Its giving you 30 million in key money and a million a month for rent?? I gotta call BS on that. |

In Gangnam you can get a one-bedroom, 15 pyeong, modern villa apt with a large verrandah, for 10,000,000 key money and 800,000 per month. I know because that's what I got!!
You could get a 8-10 pyeong studio in Gangnam for 5,000,000 key money and 500,000 per month. That should be pretty common and easy to find.
Bathtubs are rare. You should call all the real estate guys you can and ask if they have an apt with a bathtub. There must be a few!! |

Lest any newcomers to Korea be reading this, don't misunderstand: bathtubs are indeed standard in apartments and houses here. It's just that when we're talking about "officetels" and smaller-sized apartments, those will typically have just showers (either stalls or just a hose attached to a wall). In Gangnam (southern Seoul) the higher housing costs tend to push all but the smaller places beyond one's budget.
I used to live in one- and then a two-bedroom apartment in Gangnam years ago, and they each had the combined bathtub/shower design. From what I've seen in recent years, though, they'll not even 'plan in' the space for a tub when then construct smaller apartments anymore. And I've never heard of an "officetel" with a bathtub.
On a related theme, I'm surprised Tiger Beer hasn't started a "Do you take showers or baths?" thread yet.
As for myself, I'm usually in too much of a hurry to take a proper bath, as that involves drawing the bath, soaking in it (never worth the effort unless I've got at least 30 minutes to burn getting all prune-like), and then showering off the tub scum from both me and the bathtub. All told, it's an hour-long procedure, and who's got that much time to lounge around?
Unless, it's a Saturday or Sunday, ideally with something chilled, in a bottle, and near to hand. And preferrably not alone. But of course, then, the objective isn't getting clean. Rather quite the opposite. |

Im not gonna get into the specifics. The key money was from the government. Im paid by the district office not the school. I was given the option of several places, they were gonna give me housing allowance of 1 million anyway. I could have taken a cheaper place and kept the difference. Also, I have the option of getting the place for myself by giving them the key money, and they would still pay me the housing allowance.
Just because my situation makes yours look like you are working for peanuts doesnt mean its not true. |

DW, why do we have to keep hearing about your gig and housing on a regular basis? You use it as a status tool on a board where many of us have better set-ups, yet you don't see us jamming it down the throats of everybody.
It's actually quite remarkable that you have this trend of making everyone aware of your job and housing, yet you don't offer a lick of teaching or lesson planning advice or starting threads on those subjects, despite you saying that you are a real teacher who preps so well and thoroughly, that you no longer have anything to do during your office time for the next several months.
If you really must lobby for respect and admiration here, why don't you pursue this need in something that is constructive and beneficial to others, like starting threads about your teaching methodologies or your experiences of incorporating TPR elements into the classroom, etc...? |

Hold on there partner. The thread reads "Kangnam apartment advice", does it not? I chimed in with a comment about the COST of life here, and since I live in Kangnam, I shared my personal experience. Then Saxlif calls me a liar, so I responded. Eamo also wrote about the cost of HIS place, yet I dont see you riding him. If a thread about housing around Jamsil pops up, you wont see me posting there.
To the OP, Kangnam has expensive hosuing. It will not be easy to find something cheap but it probably is possible.
As for planning, I already said that I used my vacation to plan an entire curriculum until the end of the year for grades 3 through 6. How much more clear must I be about that?
And threads about teaching methodology are quite rare here Chronic. You know that. I (and 99% of other posters) use this place as a bit of entertainment, to start threads about work would be, well, defeating the point. |

Because Eamo doesn't wax elitism and condescension when he talks about his job and abode, like in your response to Saxiif:
