| Boy, I just couldn't suggest a used laptop for anyone when a new Dell laptop goes for $700. Mac 12-inch Ibooks start at just over a thousand-- it may be worth the extra bucks to avoid all the PC malware and viruses. With used computers, it's a crapshoot and the new ones are cheap and getting cheaper. |

I just want to add one thing. If you buy a used notebook, and you plan on getting an external DVD+RW drive then make sure the laptop has USB 2.0 ports, you are going to wait for ever on USB 1.0 to write a CD.
Oh, and the last time I checked, "decent" used laptops were going for a little under W1,000,000. So if you have the extra few hundred to spare, buy a new one.
Just my 5 cents. |

What would you consider to be a decent amount...? |

Suggested RAM for XP is 512. You might be able to get by with 256 as long as you don't do much with it, but you're asking for trouble.
Of course, my advice was not to buy "used". |
