Hello all! I just moved to South Korea about three weeks ago to teach English here in Masan. So far I have been enjoying the teaching and the exploring, but I haven't yet found any other foreigners to hang out with.

I like the Koreans, they have all been very friendly and welcoming, but I would enjoy being able to chat with someone without having to talk slowly or explain myself constantly.

Also, if anyone knows how to get from Masan to Changwon by bus I would really appreciate the info. I do not drive.

I'm from Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Thanks in advance!! Very Happy

I could be your friend if you didn't have your elvish name tattooed on your ankle. Or I mean if you didn't have an elvish name.

Woop! Woop! Fantasy geek alert! Woop! Woop!

Take it from someone who's got a Tolkien character's name tattooed on his birth certificate, you're a geek. You will die alone in Masan surrounded by your geeky books.

I have lived in Changwon and Masan for a little over 3 years so I should be able to help you out.

Where do you live in Masan?? If it is Shin Masan then All That Jazz(near Kyeongnam University) and the new Irish Bar Joyces in Chandong may be what you are looking for.

If you live more over to Hapseong dong then the best bet would be to hop on a bus to Changwon and go to O'Briens.
here is the website

There are many buses maybe hundreds a day.
Buses 300, 305,307 and 308 are good.

305(red bus) may be the best one, just get off at the big roundabout next to Emart and you are in downtown Changwon. It goes every 9 minutes. Cost is 1400 won. Pay as you go in the door.

I'm not actually in Masan itself - I'm in a place called Naseo-eup just to the northwest. Gotta take a bus to get to Masan. Thanks for the info on O-Brian's, I'll try to check it out!

Thorin - I have met ONE person here who has seen the movies. Also just coincidentally the school I work with happens to have a Tolkien illustrated 2005 calendar, but they don't really know what it's about. Sigh. Not that I expected to run into a secret enclave of Tolkienites but hey, one can hope!! Wink

I have warned you and warned you often.

Masan is the worst city in the province!

As stated a hundred times before:

* There are few foreigners in Masan
(except for factory workers from Pakistan, nice guys, but English is their second or third language)

* Masan stinks, with smoke stacks and industry bellowing in the bay.

* Masan is ugly, much uglier than Jinju, Changwon, Tongyeong or any other city in the province.

* people in Masan GAWK at foreigners more than most other cities in Korea, in fact, it's the only city where more than one person has pointed at me in a given day (four times by my count, probably more behind my back)

I have travelled South Korea from coast to coast to coast, and been in most cities, but have not seen one I'd like to live in LESS than Masan.

You won't find many of us living there. And thank goodness for that!

That's just the way it is.

By the way, if you want to get away from there for a weekend, feel free to visit Geoje island. Very Happy Dinner's on me. Take a bus via Tongyeong.

Most people in masan seem to hang out at the Irish bar in Chandong so if you don't know where it is when you go to Jazz next time ask one of the foreigners there and they will point you the right way...

It is only 10 minute taxi ride from kyeongnam uni...

But a lot of masan foreigners on the weekend go to Changwon or Busan

I am not a big fan of Masan but I think you are being pretty harsh...where the main bus station is, is certainly a shit hole(I worked just up the road so got used to the ajummas pointing) but where the OP is living is in Shin masan in the new city and it is much nicer there.....
