Has anyone used this place?

I took my computer in to get a Trojan Horse cleaned and Windows, Office, and Norton installed. The price is 60,000 won plus 15,000 per CD if I want copies of the OS and software.

Turnaround time will be one day.

Is this a normal price? It seems high to me.

I was talking about Jonny with a co-worker the other day.

Expensive? Yes if you consider that you can do everything above yourself for the price of a couple of blank CDs (less than 1,000 won). But if you don't know computers, don't have any friends who know computers, can't understand or be understood by the guys in Yongsan, then it would be reasonable to pay for, basically, service in English.

I've used him quite often for repairs, software probs, etc and always found his service to be fast, excellent, helpful and reasonably priced. I can't remember what the first problem I had was, but my friend who is a computer repair guy at home told me to expect in Canada dor itt o cost me about $75 to fix, and Jonny did it for 15,000.

High? Well, if you consider the cost of WindowsXP, Norton and MS Office, it's super low. If you download all of the above from P2P, then, as the_beaver says, it's high.

Beggars can't be choosers.

When you get your system back, invest 10 minutes of your time learning to do all of that yourself.

I already have a Win XP CD at home, but not Norton or Office. Also, he's just installing them on the computer. CDs will cost extra. I dont really need Office, but I could get it from work if I wanted. Before I was using AVG Free as a virus program, and I don't know if it's better or worse than Norton.

I reformatted my hard drive and did a fresh installation of Windows , but I still have a Trojan horse (according to my virus program). Some people tell me that such things can infect your machine right down to the CPU and therefore you need a professional, some people tell me such a bug is impossible.

Jonny asked me who reinstalled Windows for me and I said I did it myself. He said I probably just made a mistake with the reinstallation. I don't know much about computers, but you don't need to be in MENSA to put in a CD and follow the prompts. Afaik, my installation was OK. Did he ask me that because I'm a girl? I guess I don't care either way, I just want my computer fixed.

Has anyone every gotten a similar service from him? How much did he charge? Would he negotiate?

Thanks for your advice!

I have used Jonny on a few occasions. Both times my computer rendered no response and I knew it was not the battery. Both times he fixed it. I need my computer for work and can not take the time to research each major problem that pops up. I have friends who are computer nerds Smile, but I hate to always bother them. In these emergencies Jonny fixed it for about $80,000. The last time he claimed top have taken the computer apart an and replugged in everything and then it worked. I believe him as I got no reponse suddenly. I had been taking it to class and using it and that morning I used it in one class and when I went into it again it refused to boot. I had jiggled things loose. yes, it is a laptop, but I walk to school and it took a toll.

Anyway, in emergencies we are deperate and want results and Jonny gives them. I think it is ok if he charges more than Yongsan. I can talk technical with him and I can not do that in Yongsan. To me it was worth it in those times.

Funnily enough, I had this conversation yesterday. One friend I know recommended him. However, another guy who is in the same line of work as Johnny computer (and did my computer for free) reckons Johnny is an absolute crook and not to be trusted. He has been in Seoul for 8 years and reckons he knows a lot about him. I don't know if his opinion is fair or not not so please don't take it as gospel.

There is a new place in Itaewon. It's just opened up - it's jointly run by a Korean and a waygook. It's just up from the Pizza Hut. I read about it in the free magazine you can pick up in Geckos. The writer was very impressed with the place. Maybe you could try to find it.

Just ask, I'm always willing to help you out.

Oh and the proper term is computer geek not nerd. Razz

A trojan at the hardware level!? You must be joking...a chip virus is nopt only exceedingly rare, but many makers have implemented anti-virus at this level, so....I seriously doubt that you had this problem.

Also, AV progrmas make mistakes. Did you research the supposed "trojan"? Is it authentic, or a mis-read?

Is your Windows legit? If it's not, then yes, you may have had a trojan, and well....that's what you get for free.

AVG free leaves a much smaller memory footprint than Norton.....it uses less resources and seems to be effective. Its very popular for a reason. Unless you have a lot of RAM, AVG is less noticable. With 1GB (perhaps 512MB) or more, you won't see any performance drop from Norton, although it is still eating memory.

As for help, man....that's all I try to do here on Dave's, as do many others. Like SuperHero says...just ask.

Getting a copy of Office for 15,000 is dirt cheap.

For 15,000 won do you really need to ask. Of course they are pirated. If you want to pay for pirated software, see the guy in the tunnel at yongsan - it's cheaper 10,000 per CD I believe. Not that I'm recommending this option. Wink

Hi, I live in Iteawon. There is a non english speaking guy in the alley/street from Hausbrandt. A few minutes up and on the left. Calls his English speaking friend to communicate. He put my PC together for 10,000. He hasn't got me mad yet. He's good.

Just asking because I've seen legit copies of Windows 98 online for about the same amount of money. I bought Word 2000 in 1999, or was it 2000, for 10 000 won (if I remember correctly, there was a price war between Microsoft and the maker of Hangul 97 shortly after it refused Microsoft's offer to takeover).
