so really, what we're actually looking at is another example of:
"I'm not having fun in Korea, therefore the whole country is a backwards hellhole that I can look down on with my superior western ways"? |

Well the OP said
| Quote: |
Another example of Korean conformity, one which I want to bring to attention because it's developing in the early ages... |
then everyone else said- no we had fads in my school as well, it's just a normal part of growing up. So the OP took an example of kids being kids and used it to look down on Korea. |

It was exactly the same at my elementary school in the UK. I don't think Korea is any different in this regard. |

Swiss James,
I am married here and I happen to like Korea very much, but when almost every single student has a yo- yo it seems to me to be more than a fad.
I dare say I like Korea more than you do. |

oh no way- I like Korea THIS MUCH
Do you accept that these fads are not just a korean thing?
And if so, why did you say it was 'Another example of Korean conformity.."? |

I accept a fad is a fad, but here they seem to take it to the extreme.
As "why I called it an example of Korean conformity?" because this country is conformist. If you don't know that by now... count the people wearing beards and the Koreans over thirty without a suit on. |

In my office? Right now? Out of 9, 2 are wearing a suit, 7 aren't. Only a few of the guys I know in Korea have beards, but since many asians can't really grow a proper one, and it's not particularly fashionable, I don't really see your point.
I dunno, maybe I read your original post in a more condescending way in which it was originally intended. |

yup yup, as other people have clearly pointed out 'conformatism' is something that's not limited to korea.
no one wants to feel different, we all conform to varying degrees...all our lives.
jumping rope, hand clapping, 'chinese' jump rope, cat's cradle...those type of things were big (with girls at least) when i was in elementary school...
i've seen korean teens copying japanese goth fashion and such, so... |

I think with the children it's understandable. The fact that grown-ups don't seem very grown up in this respect is rather pathetic.
On the other hand, would Koreans see us conforming in certain ways that we may not realise. |

Sorry but it's a little to spicy for my tastes. Almost as spicy as Mexican food... oops! |

The example the OP offered up was not very good, but Korea is certainly more conformist than other industrialised nations. |

This thread blows goats. I want the last few minutes of my life back for reading it.
I mean that in a non-conformist type way. |
