Something better than the messed up Pimsleur and more advanced than the short conversational tapes that come with "Survival Korean" by Revere (I recommend the Survival book by the way).
It's so easy to find English study stuff of course but... for Korean? The idea of Pimsleur is good (and I like the Spanish and Chinese 90 30minute "courses") but Pimsleur Korean fails in execution. So I need either something better than Pimsleur, with English explanations on the tape. Or, more tapes like the ones that come with Revere's "Survival Korean" with the explanations written out.
Asking alot I know, just looking to see if there's any new resources out there.
Yes, I'm messing around a bit with learning from music. Also, I know about Sogang.
Any help appreciated... |

I'm too lazy to check this online but -- Revere, as in the guy from "Let's Speak Korean?"
I'm on the hunt for audio too. I found some tapes at a bookstore for "Korean Through English," but I didn't buy them. I have a friend who used them and liked them a lot.
I downloaded and started listening to the Pimsleur audios, and my girlfriend started laughing.
"We don't talk like that. That's like -- North Korea talk."
I'll post when I find something. |

Turn on the TV. Then look away.
Nah, seriously, the website www.teenkorean.com has a lot of audioclips, pretty basic stuff. And its free. Every few weeks I get an automatic email from them and I think, "teenkorean? i don't remember signing up for any porno sites" and then I open the mail and remember what it is.
A word of warning though, my Korean friend said that their speaking is pretty unnatural. But I think it's due to bad acting as opposed to bad scripts. That's why I would actually recommend, in all seriousness, just watching TV. Some of the scripts in the dramas are so simplistic it's like a teaching tool.
Yeah, it's pretty frustrating finding materials for learning Korean. I look at all the fancy crap that Koreans are able to use for learning English and I get so jealous. But then I gotta remember, I live in a country surrounded by native speakers of the language I wanna learn. |

One of my pet peeves is Korean language tapes with tons of English in it, which is why I disliked the Korean through English set.
For good Korean-only listening material, use the tapes that were designed for the Yonsei books. It's been a few years since I've been there, but somewhere at the Yonsei Language Institute they should be selling the tape sets... it's all Korean, from front to back.
I've been meaning to pay a tape deck so I can stroll around town while listening to Korean.
