They are always looking for your approval on first meeting. Taxi drivers will drive like they're on a racetrack to impress you. they will point out local glorious landmarks (Ahem..that stadium looks like a piece of litter on the landscape). They will want you to love soju, taekwondo, and anything Korean.
They're usually taken aback to find that I am impressed the most,by what they wouldn't look at twice: natural, unharmed landscape. Oh look, that stream is pretty...or..those mountains look pretty clthed in forest".
Not really bothered by all their technological advancement or the fact that you can get the best cellphones here.

Funny how every post turns into some excuse to bash Canadians. Fucking grow up and get a life.

Maybe I should do the opposite for bad people. Like this:

Did you know Ted Bundy was British? Did you know OJ Simpson is American?

Exactly Ilsanman! Canada has it's faults yes. However it is relatively safe, just like Korea. You certainly can't say the same about the Excited States of America. I do not hate Americans or bash them just for fun. It is more dangerous though, that's a fact.
Koreans are insecure yes. They have been bullied and pushed around by their more powerful neighbours for thousands of years. So I can excuse a little insecurity on their part.
Hee hee. I am holding my own against the Japanese, Chinese and Mongols in my Civilization 3 game currently. (Rhyes of Civ mod) Anyone know of any Koreans that like to play Civilization. I would love to play multiplayer with someone. All the ones I meet just want to play Crazy Arcade, that crappy racing game and Starcraft. Sad Yes I am a computer playing geek sometimes...

It is true and unfortunately a bit of a parallel with Korea. What's most pathetic in both cases is that some of the biggest America bashers deal with their inferiority complex by emulating America the most. Don't like America? Stop buying/watching/reading/wearing/ immitating it. There's much more interesting stuff in other countries anyways.

Actually, there is a very simple explanation to this. It's due to Japanese policies during the occupation to Korea. The Japanese failed to assimilate Koreans, which had the predictable outcome of reinforcing notions of Korean ethnic nationalism. Additionally, Japan's anti-western drive that began in the late 30s as it prepared for war with the US were also a failure because they made Koreans even more interested in western culture (if the Japanese occupational government said something was bad, in the mind of Koreans it was probably good). As a result, many Koreans are fascinated by western culture, but feel Korean culture is superior.

Given I'm Canadian, I'm not bashing Canadians, per se. I just see something of home here. The Korean insecurity isn't unique in the world. Canadians express it too in a way remarkably like that of Koreans.

So eat me.

Gee, you must have had a strange life in Canada. My friends and I were too busy talking about/complaining about: Women, sports, politics (American and Canadian), work, the good old highschool and university days... Oh Yes! and women.

Sure we would hack America every once in a while, but Americans also hack their government's policies too. Hardly, if ever, did we brag about Canada being a safer place.. It was more along the lines of Clinton stealing the silverware from the Whitehouse and Monica. I also remember having many discussions on how their beer is pisswater.

Nice, now there's something in this thread that's actually worth arguing about!

Enough of bashing countries, American beer is the win. Who cares if it's watery, it'll get you hammered. It's all about Natty Light, like $10 for 24 cans. You just have to drink like half a case but damn... if I drink 1 Canadian beer it's like I just ate a meal and don't want to drink anymore. Call me a lightweight! Laughing

Past experience, not much boozing going on these days... not even considering I haven't seen much Natural Light for sale here in Korea. Very Happy

Natrual Light is sickkkkkk I use to drink that in the Corps... ahh but to keep it ontopic I think Korean Soju is crap but I hate vodka and gin too soo dooo not label me ethnocentric. Errr well JD always r00lz though ahhh but lets see- Korea is in a state of denial, or perhaps just does not care about the sad state of it's urban sprawl and lack of Eco industry laws errr maybe I just made that up but Seoul Air is way dirtier than Cali LA whiff. And Jeju beaches seem to have a lot of trash just look at Iho beach for example.

You just made yourself look stupid with your last line.

Anyways...I don't hack on America so much. I like it for its good things and hate it for its bad things, just like anyone else.

Seems to me that being a safer country would be a good thing... Just like in Korea - I've never felt unsafe anywhere, at any time (in Korea or Canada).... except maybe on this forum......

To get back on topic: why does my gf have to go out and get hammered with her co-workers every payday?

Korean explanation: because if one person doesn't go along it's a lot less fun for everyone else.

I like this country for a lot of reasons, and dislike it for a few as well. But I have never heard anything as sad & needy as this. I 'm tempted to call bull*beep* guilt trip, but something tells me this might be something people actually believe. Anyone more intimate with the culture wanna try and elucidate/elaborate?

Tommy, I don't think it really is a fun thing. I think it has to do with conformity (sorry, yeah... same thing again and not really restricted to Korea) and the fear that you will get excluded in the office if you don't go out with them when everyone wants to go. I know that's how they feel at my husband's company. Often I don't go but that's OK, I am the boss' wife but I know if one of the employees don't go once, they talk about it for ages and are not very friendly to this one person until the next time....
