That's called "trot" or "tuh roh tuh" music. The funky organ, the woman screaming yeeha and the drum machine are a great combo for the hands-clapping rhythmically set.

I'm obsessed with , and "ӳ" will probably be stuck in my head for a good few years.

(BTW- I don't really recommend it to anyone unless they actually do like some of the funky "trot" taxi music, as a great many certainly would think it sucks...)

I thought you meant 'Bong Chak' when you described 'trot' music. I dig that stuff too.

I also think Koreans under-rate what they have there. It's seen as music for the middle-aged but it's actually the only 'modern' (if the 70's is modern...) music that is distinctively Korean. It's their musical art-form but I don't even think they recognize that as it's seen as something that ajumma's and ajeossi's get their freak on with.

When you think of the ridiculous things Koreans make such a big fuss about in the name of promoting Korean culture (Kimchi, BOA, that ultra-feminine guy who's big in Japan...) you would think they would promote Bong Chak a bit more.

I totally concur. I 'borrowed' my F-I-L's tape from his car at the airport to take back to Australia when we left. When visitors ask about K-music, I play that: Their truly own form of modern music. Embarrases the *beep* out of the wife though. I deliberately never play it whilst on a bus though. Don't wanna break out wiggling my arse and dancing up and down the aisle in public. Not sober anyway.

Nell was good, from what I saw of them live a couple years ago (Ssamzie Fest '03)... I hate making comparisons like this, but the singer's voice/vocal style sorta reminded me of Thom Yorke (from Radiohead)... The band itself doesn't particularly sound like Radiohead or anything, but I thought the singer kinda did... Lots of passion, kinda melancholy... good!

Oh yeah, and Rock Tiger live is something not to be missed... I think they play a few of the live Hongdae clubs (Drug?) semi-regularly. Not so much the tunes (which are still alright), but the presentation itself- hilarious.

Cherry Filter Shocked
They're actually good. Most of the other stuff I've been keeping is in the "hmmmm, its OK but I'll keep it because its Korean" category. But Cherry Filter is actually really good music Shocked

Roller Coaster (though their newer stuff is a lot different from their older stuff)

Peter Pan Complex (sounds like Korean old-school Radiohead)

Do Won Kyoung Band (if you're into Guns N' Roses)

Clazziquai (already mentioned) are great. A bit like St Etienne perhaps??

3 ȣButterfly sound promising.

̴ٿ and Ű are two coffee-table electronica groups that I've discovered on Bugs.
