|
|
Not sure if this is the right forum for this but here goes.
I am moving to Korea soon and I need to know about cell phones vs land lines. I have checked the forum and and there is so much that I just can't seem to find a straight forward answer.
Here are my questions?
Is it better to get a cell phone or land line in terms of long distance calling to Canada? How much would each cost approximately? I know that there are phone cards and different plans. I am also planning to get the internet as long as my laptop works and I can find the adaptor.
Thanks for all of your help. |

Having both cellphone and landline is affordable in Korea. Then just check out whatever international call plan is cheapest.
I only use cellphone. |

A landline costs 5200won (excl tax) per month. Very cheap. You also have to pay a refundable deposit when you set up the account (I was lucky, my BOE had done all this before I arrived)(even though they didn't get any appliances or my gas connected so I had a phone but no hot water or fridge or stove or microwave for 4 days)
There are a million types of phonecards you can buy in shops/online for the cheapest deals for international calls.
Once you buy the card, you dial a number and then input your card number. The phone number you dial may or may not be toll free, it depends on the card you buy. For example, if you are using a landline, it may be toll-free, but if you call from a mobile phone, the connecting phone number may not be toll-free, which means you'll be charged twice, if you get what I mean.
The per-minute call rates also differ depending on if you are calling: 1) Land-land; 2) Land-mobile; 3) Mobile-Land; 4) Mobile-Mobile. |

You still get charged per minute with a land line, right?
I just buy one of the cards and go to a payphone and call from there. I like SPOT card to call the USA with. It is toll-free, so you don't have to keep pluggin the phone with money. Calling by cellphone costs per minute to my cell phone company. |

All you'll need is a plug-end adaptor, available in any hardware store here for maybe 20 cents. Well, & a provider.
Derrek, you really do long-distance from payphones? I've never used a phonebooth here. Never had reason to.
(Theres some payphones at Seorak Park with a big sign over top: Maybe someone wants your voice. I like that.) |

Thanks for all of the info. I am just trying to get a sense of things before I get there. I am hoping to be there in 2.5 weeks and want to make sure that I can call home with few hassles.
All the best. See you in Korea!! |

If you want to make calls abroad, I suggest using skype on your pc. Quality is good, and it is free pc to pc and very cheap from pc to phone. |
