hi folks, just wondered if anyone could help me . . .

i just wondered whether its possible to take toiec or tesol exams as a foreigner in korea as i want to make the most of my free time here and add as many pluses to my resume for when i renegotiate my contract

i don't know agreat deal about tesol, tho a korean colleague of mine reckons u can sit toiec exams in seoul, tho he's not sure where . . .

also, are the exams standard ie. same wherever u sit them, so one taken in korea would be viewed on the same merit as one in the uk for example?

thanx in advance for any responses and help

TESOL = Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages.

It's not a test. I think you might mean TOEFL. Check out Yonsei University. I think they have a big TOEFL testing center there.

I recently took a practice TOEIC test at my uni. What an eye-opener! Converstation classes do NOTHING to help with these exams!!! Especially if you follow one of the "popular" books!

Next semester, I'm going to focus on phrasal verbs (most Korean students don't know what they are, and I'll bet most teachers don't, either! Check out the phrasal verb page here on Dave's!), and HOW to listen!

The first half of the listening test consists of pictures that the student is asked questions about. Some of the "answers" are absurd! Example: One woman is standing at a podium, and another woman is standing to the side of her with papers in her hand. The possible "correct" answers were: "A woman is standing at a podium" (true). "Two women are having a debate." (possibly true) "One woman is introducing another to an audience" (also possibly true!) I chose the "podium" answer, since I figured they were looking for vocab...but pity the poor Korean student who's never HEARD of a podium! The other answers were also possible!

If you teach uni students, do youself a favor and take a practice test! Since we all know that the TOEIC is THE test (right or wrong...don't get me started!!), it might help you to teach them what they REALLY need!

Koreans don't take classes with foreigners to improve thier TOEIC/TOEFL score. They take it to improve thier fluency and confidence in spoken English.

I spend a lot of time in my classes teaching learner autonomy, styles, & strategies. basically teaching them how to learn a language. I spend time building confidence so that they will use English with other Koreans outside of class and thus increase their opportunities to practice and improve fluency.

In my experience most of my students are interested in being able to communicate more than they are in improving thier TOEIC/TOEFL scores. I also tell them that if they want to improve those scores they should take a different or additional class.

Koreans only need TOEIC/TOEFL scores to get a job interview. But once there they need the right skills to be able to communicate in English. That is your job as an English teacher. Unless of course you have been hired to teach TOEIC/TOEFL.

Would I be right in saying that university students are the ones who definitely need a high TOEIC score? For example, if they ARE hired by a 'good' company, then the positon that they get within that company is sometimes entirely based on their TOEIC score. From what I've seen, some university students' main goal with English is to get a good score on the test so that they can get a good job.
