My present contract is up in August. I'd like to try for a uni position, though I only have a BA and two and half years classroom experience (one and a half years of which has been here in Korea).

Can anyone share their experience, hope, and strength on securing university positions with only a BA and teaching experience?

I've said it before and I'll again. Anybody can get a university job if you approach it the right way (see this).

I'm coming to the end of my fourth year teaching in universities and I only have a BA (although I'm working toward my MA). I think the majority of university teachers I know only have a BA.

Yes.

Having the CELTA, or some kind of recognized certificate helps, as does knowing people on the staff.

Yup. I did. Ditto on the qualifications, but I think the biggest thing is being in the right place at the right time. Good luck.

yeah, two of my good friends did. One in Cheonnan and another living near the DMZ.

The one in Cheonnan just had 1 year of experience (and nothing else) where the other spent around 3 beforehand.

Both cases, it was just a matter of being proactive about getting a uni job.

Yeah me too.. I'm on my second university and half way through my 5th year of university teaching. Will complete my M.A. in June.

It also doesn't hurt if you're young and good looking.

Back in Jan and Feb I applied to several universities to see what was out there and was told by one that I was too old, and told by two others that I didn't have "the right look."

I have 5 years teaching experience; 2 years in Korea. and one at a university in China. And I have a CELTA, but no Master's. Apparently this is not enough to overcome my age and looks.

i think that if you managed to survive a year in korea teaching, be that kids or adults, most universities in korea will take you. for better jobs i'd imagine they would take into account nationality, whether you have an English major, years of experience, and whether you have a TESOL cert. this provided that you're not a complete galah in the interview.

I got one just the other day...

I have only a Batchers degree, (management)

no English language certificates
no Masters degree
no TESOL
no CELTA

I do have, a great understanding of Korea, have lived here and taught for 3 years at good schools,

I do have great references (written and verbal) from my two schools.

I do have experience teaching a wide variety of students

completly it is up to how you sell your self!

Anyone can get a university job if they have what it takes to do what the university needs and you can sell your self.

It is also a matter of what university,

granted i am at a top university in seoul which is in a very specalised field of tertiary education in korea, so I was able to sell my skills to match their school, (although the school is not a management school and is in a completely different field)
