One of my favorite foods is those fish-shaped waffle-cake things stuffed with red beans and sold by street vendors. I don't remember the name because I never had to order them, just pay. Imagine my shock yesterday when for the the first time ever, the cakes were filled, not with red beans, but onions and peppers. I'm curious about the name, but I'm really curious to know if there's some pattern to this--do they generally sell one at a certain time or day for instance? Any reason for the substitution? It was the same vendor.
Anybody know?

My Korean spelling is horrible but I believe it is ؾ (poon-oh-pang). I too love those cakes. Just remember to say "poong-o-bang" NOT "pung-o-pang (because that means "fart")...an embarrasing experience for me.

Strange, I never seen one with onions...yuk! Sometimes Koreans put some real strange things in food. That could have just been a different food stand...most poon-oh-bang has that tasty red bean paste. At least that I know...maybe someone knows more(?) because i don't want any fish cake onion thingies either.

I don't eat any actual fish cakes. I'm a vegetarian. The fish-shaped cakes have no fish in them, just a waffle on the outside and sweet red bean on the inside.
The onion-pepper ones were good, too. They had no red beans and nothing sweet and no fish, so they weren't gross, just a big shock, since always before the waffles were stuffed with red bean.
Has anyone had the onion kind?

Some Ex-Pat guys exported the idea to the N.W. U.S.A. with different fillings (feta and spinach, pizza, ect ... with soup) and are making a killing ...

At least they were ... The were called "No Fish" or something simular ...

I got a sorry disappointment the first time I bit into one, thinking it was chocolate!

Never had one again.

M- if you liked those you'll like the veggie steam buns. Check the color of the dot for filling.

A Korean explained that they have two kinds and that kids like the bean filling and adults like the onion filling. Or was it the other way around.
And that you could get either kind by asking, sometimes....

Wonder if the name for them given on previous posts only applies to the bean ones or to both varieties?

I just used to call it "fish bread" and all the kids knoew what I was talking about...they laughed at me, but knew what I was talking about. I too love and miss "fish bread".
I had one in Seattle a while back..filled with cheese and veggies. It was ok..not great -just ok. It paled in comparison to traditional fish bread.
I also miss/love the walnut cakes (hodu-kwaja) filled with the beans ("pat"?). I don't mind the ones filled with koguma, but prefer the ones with the red beans.
