I don't know abything about new rules for an E-2. I do remember the abortion that involved changing the rules re. 3 year degrees back in '02. That lasted all of about a month, if I remember right.

Was cruising around and found this on EFL Law.

http://efl-law.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=545

Maybe the EFL law guy can put this rumor to bed or substantiate it later.

And you were expecting what answer? This from an organization who thinks "F-2-1" is the name of a new Korean boy band.

Maybe something to the rumor, maybe not. We'll just have to see I guess.

If we know something what makes you think others dont? Is Daves some magical place, insulated from the outside with some magic access to super secret news?

If there was some huge change coming, all it takes is ONE wonjangnim with soomeone they know on the inside finding out, telling his other wonjangnim friends, and you would see huge protests. Imagine 60% of haggies lose a foreigner. OK? that automatically puts the 40% who have a foreigner at a HUGE advantage. Not good for business. If there was something brewing, you would know it by the protests. Koreans LOVE protests. Korea has a huge grapevine. News like this would spread like a fire through a dry forest.

And you were expecting what answer? This from an organization who thinks "F-2-1" is the name of a new Korean boy band.

I've done a bit of trawling of google but haven't found anything. It certainly seems out of step with stuff like this to get rid of most of the teachers teaching here.

Surely the easiest way to weed out the illegal teachers woul be to get rid of that 6 month canadian tourist visa which is way too long imho. Problem is that it's a reciprocal agreement so the koreans will lose their rights to be tourists in canada for 6 months. Also they might want to start asking people who continually come and go on toursit visas. Surely if you've entered the rok on two or three tourist visas they might raise a red flag somewhere.

I don't have an over inflated view myself. I know that in the end korea could turf us all out tomorrow. We are all quests here . Always have a back up plan/money because our jobs here could vanish tomorrow.

I can't imagine that many directors would be happy with this. There is an entire industry built up around us in addition to service industries etc. but in the end we could all be ejected tomorrow.

So all the illegal teachers in Korea are Canadian? Wink Very Happy 6 months is a long time I agree.... every other country has 30 days?

The only people who bitch about Canadian tourist visas are envious people. If the shoe were on the other foot.........

You know, I can't accept this guilt by passport that I have gained from living here.

What makes you think the immigration clerk you or your lovely wife spoke with has the answers to every question? How many threads have we read where the story you get from immigration changes by day, by person, by phase of the moon, by office, by power trip etc., etc.

I suppose you have an F-2 visa - so do I, how many different sets of directions have different people I know personally and on this board received from immigration reference this visa? How helpful is the immigration website re. the F-2 - oh yeah - there is nothing about it the last time I checked..

How many threads have there been about conflicting information about a simple E-2 visa question received by persons from the all-knowing, all-seeing demi-gods at immigration? How many times have we read things on this and other websites where the foreigner had to educate the immigration clerk about the visa law?

How many times have we heard about having to speak with several people in the same office to get the real story - it happened to me this week. I had to speak with 3 different people in the same office to get the answer to a simple question. Just today I spoke with someone who got hit with a 500,000 Won fine from immigration for following the directions they received from an immigartion clerk when he called them with a simple question.

So yeah, for someone to say I called immigration and they said no, so that's the real story - I take it with a grain of salt. As I do with much of the information I read on this board most of the time.

I also believe people on this board overestimate the "grapevine" and the idea that the Wonjangs will know what is going on before the minions do. I am in a position to sit in on the Hogwan association meetings, and meetings between the education administration and hogwan owners and immigration representatives. I do it every month. Let me clue all of you into to something - there is no conspiracy. On the whole, hogwan owners are just as in the dark on a lot of issues as teachers are. Maybe even more so.

I know from personal experience that teachers have gotten the news about something before the Hogwan association I am affiliated with received it. There have been times when things are reported on this site and others before coming out to hogwan owners and directors. I have personally heard, numerous times, owners in meetings say "One of my foreign teachers heard that....." or "My teacher told me that....."

I was here when they tried that old scheme of disallowing 3 year BA's for E-2 visa's. I remember I read about it on the internet a looong time before I heard about it from "official" or "semi-official" sources. Teachers knew about it way before most Wonjangs in my area did.

People give Hogwan owners and directors waaaaay too much credit for cohesion and unity of purpose. From my observation, most hogwan owners don't even like each other!!!

If there were a juicy bit of news to come out I can pretty much guarantee that the owner who got the information WOULD NOT share it. What sense does it make to take a strategic business advantage like inside knowledge of important changes in the law and squander it. Most likely the hogwan owner would feign ignorance while trying to prepare for the change and positioning themselves so as to take advantage of those owners who are caught with their pants down. I've seen it happen on a smaller scale with changes to the education regulations regarding hogwans - one or two were in the know and the rest were left out in the cold by their Hogwan Association buddies.

Hogwans are a cutthroat business. This idea that they would be banding together and singing "We are the world, We are the wonjangs", just doesn't fit with reality as I know it. But who knows, this IS Korea, strange things happen.

I think too often we ascribe evil intent to the actions of Wonjangs when it is more accurately related to sheer stupidity on their part.

Anyway this posting was way longer than I anticipated. Sorry.

I don't have a clue. I wasn't even going to post on this thread. But then I read something about this on EFL-Law so it got my attention. The guys over at EFL-Law seem to have their feces consolidated about most stuff - so them talking about hearing a rumor over a month ago about it, made me pay a little closer attention.

It probably is BS or at worst a small experiment concocted by a constipated immigation official doomed to failure like the 3 year diploma thing.

I guess we'll just have to see.

Take care

EFL guy said he would fill us in on details. He hasnt. Why not? I would think that this would be pretty much the most important issue facing the EFL community in Korea, if it were true. But the thread on the forum has almost been relegated to the 2nd page. Wouldnt you think so?

I thought only Americans regretted their passports when travelling.
