| I would be careful if I were you. A jealous man is something to avoid. Why do people fight? It has to do with the animal part of the brain, an angry person cannot think clearly, logic, the neocortex, is the part of the brain we use when we are calm, serene, but a man who is drunk, or in a fight, or just plain angry, cannot think clearly. If he sees you, their is no telling what he will do! The main thing is to ask questions, this gets the neo cortex working, ask him something like "wayyyyy"? why? This will bring the problem to the neo cortex, and thus logic. Be careful!!!!!!!! |

| Leave her to get the beats, even if he takes a bat to her. You will never come out on top in these situations. |

I posted something like this a little while ago.....I didn't see but heard it... What a horrible feeling ...to not be able to do anything to help...I don't speak korean so I couldn't even call the police. I called my husband at work and questioned him..."why didn't anyone else in the building help her? why didn't they at least call the police??" He said that in the past people did indeed try to help....but were sued if they "harmed" the man who was beating the woman....so this has detered a lot of people from wanting to get involved...as to why they don't call the police....he said they just don't want to get involved.. I remember when my father was alive he had a similar situation happen to him in canada.....a man was beating his wife in the street...my father came to her rescue only to be attacked by the woman....but that didn't stop him in the future....he still got involved....sometimes I think that perhaps this is happening in canadian society too....people don't want to get involved. I guess its a fine line....when you don't know the circumstances....I tell my husband all the time..."you see...western men have a hard time here when they see a woman being beaten, sure it happens in canada, but most men will at least try to help"...I know things are different in Korea...as foreigners we have to be very careful what we do.....sometimes I wonder if I am overestimating western men...perhaps I'm giving them too much credit. Anyway ..the sad thing is the women don't seem to want help....have Korean women never been taught to defend themselves..? Are there any that try...? |

Must have been a Thursday. Oh, it's Friday? When did Korean men start beating women outside of Thursdays? Oh, right. Must have forgotten. |

Considering you and hellofaniceguy are one and the same, I'm not surprised.
I was debating this with my conversation class tonight. The conscensus was that men are superior because they are stronger. And the acceptability of women beating is due to Korean history, when a certain king decided to have no queen and put the royal heirarchy as all-male, ridding women of their status. |

I say good job for stepping in. You didn't do anything that could get you in trouble, but a foreigner stepping in should be an embarassment to all the Koreans standing around watching, if nothing else.
Although you may not know the situation, I generally think violence is not a solution (and after having lived here and met many Koreans, I also tend to think they overreact to everything). I think I'd step in in a situation like this.
If you can speak Korean, I think Shakahuchi has the right idea. Embarass the man in front of everyone. You don't lay a finger on him (lest he strikes), hence you have less to worry about.
In the end, the police are also correct. Unless the women are strong enough to stand up for themselves, you can't help them. |

| Many of us from the West are brought up with the idea of chivalry, whether we practice it actively or not. Korean men are not. |

dude, i hope you are posting this to show are insane this society can be. it's the same as a saying, "a girl wearing a short skirt deserves to get raped."
we saw a man beating up his wife on the subway. only after my boyfriend stood up to stop it, then a korean man told the bad man to chill out. it was totally weird. |
