| Can you just clarify that the co-worker this was written to is the same Korean co-worker who 'brushed it aside'? |
yes it is the one in the same. i may have worded that wrong. she was quite upset about the letter, enough so to discuss it with me. once i explained to her what exactly was so wrong about it, she realsised that brushing it aside was not an option.

| Secondly, does the teacher in question deserve to be called mean, as in do they beat their students or treat them unfairly? Or is the kid just in a snot because they were given homework, perish the thought? |
He is just in a snot! he is a spoilt brat who doesnt like to be told what to do ie writing assignments ( 1st instance, threw the pencil away and strted bawling, for the fact he didnt feel like doing his writing assignment that day!) as for beating the student haha, not at all mate!

| Thirdly, the English, while impressive for a 10 year old, especially in terms of vocabulary, is hardly word-perfect. |
yeah i know, not so word perfect, but very readable. sorry for the exageration!

| Fourthly, I would not take this as a laughing matter because, even if it was funny, that would send the wrong message |
no, not a laughing matter in my opinion too. thATs what ive been trying to get across. my intial anger has gone, now its a matter of what to do with this kid. shaming cant work as he is often the only student in the class (maybe a secondary problem.) but anyway, i AM his teacher also, so i have the right to intervene in this situation, just to make it clear. so i have him today, by himself, and we'll see how this goes. the verbal apologies don't work (been there done that on the other instances, very arrogantly done), so we'll work on the writing i think! anyway, thanks mathewoodford. hope this claers things up. let you know how it goes

Good luck. If all else fails, you could put on a balaclava, waylay the kid in a dark alley one night, and break rocks with his head. |

Once in 2nd grade, on an assignment to write a story about the class, I wrote a horrible story about the whole class and spared no one. The teacher congratulated my writing skills and had everyone write stories about me.
Then, while in 4th grade at an American school in Germany, I would draw swastikas all over my bookbox (unknowing of it's more notorious associations). The teacher kept me after class and gave me a stern, though caring reprimand of what it was I was drawing and how it could offend the German cleaning ladies. |

| Your teacher friend, if she is really is that upset should play a similar game. Draw a picture of the moon on the board and at the bottom draw a rocket. Put a little picture of the boy in question, or even a stickman with his name next to the rocket. Show the class. Then erase the stickman and erase the rocket. Now draw the rocket lifting off from the Earth and put the boy's name next to the rocket. Show the class. Now erase the rocket and draw again with the boy on the moon. Say he is being punished. This will show the students and himself how it feels to be blasted off into space and then he will begin to feel compassion for his teacher having been blasted off in his own letter. Explain to the class, "see it doesn't feel nice to be blasted off into space all by yourself". If you're really lucky, the boy will even start crying, as has been my own experience. This will give you the chance to comfort him and develop a stronger relationship. You can now even draw yourself on the moon next to the boy. You can tell the class..."We are now space buddies." |

Worst advice ever
Some of you people shouldn't be allowed within 100 yards of children |

The kid is clearly being treated by the teacher too nicely, and for that matter by some here!
Why can't some teachers here realise that kids are kids and not adults.
I make a mistake I suffer for it, it's no different for kids but there are so many frightened teachers too willing or scared to stand up against this type of behaviour.
Sure Korea is different and some of the people here contribute to the educational mess I and other GOOD teachers have to correct and suffer for.

hey guys
heres a little heads up as to what happened after i talked with him yesterday.
i sat him down for a good 20 minutes, and tried to explain or ask just what his problem was. he has a wee problem with learning english from a KOREAN! well after establishing this with him, we talked what we could do about it. so verything is sorted with us, but still, he has got his own way, ie, changing his korean teacher, but ........
his mum came in too, so talked to her about his attitude (her question!) so hopefully he has got the message loud and clear and everything works out! if anyone is interested ill keep you posted on whats up.

i would use it as an opportunity to discuss the difference between a diary and a journal; something the teacher apparently didn't do. ie: diaries are private, and are where ones self-centered and unkind thoughts should go. journals are meant to be shared.
Pardon me if I say so (and Im not the first) but, we should be requiring our students to write journals, not diaries. is it possible that the smart little bugger knew this? |
