Internet users to get new IDs for Web use
To protect Internet users' privacy, the government said yesterday that it plans to implement special codes or other means of identification so that people don't have to use their actual resident registration number when signing up for access to Web sites or electronic transactions.
"After discussing with Internet-related companies and holding public hearings, we will try to introduce this new online authorization system during the second half of this year," said Kang Jung-hyup of the Information Ministry.

That's why I haven't been plugging the petition all that much recently; wanted to see what happens with their numbers first. I thought they were supposed to decide this in March though. |

I saw that on the news two days ago too. My first thought was, "it won't happen". My second thought was, "we won't get one [a virtual ID] anyway".
In other news of big plans heralded then later quietly dropped, no large-denomination Korean currency will be printed after all. |

Maybe I should print the petition out now and take it to the gov't this week then. It has some 2150 signatures or so and it might do to let them know that we should have a viable option as well.
Now which government building would that be in? I only work from 3 to 8 so there's lots of time in the morning. |

I simply can't understand why any kind of number is needed for a website anyway. Where's the damage to society if I were to secretly run two cyworlds under different names? |

Not a m*****f****** thing, but we're dealing with a higher degree of paranoia here. |

Okay, I just phoned them. The phone number for the area that takes care of RR numbers on the internet is 750-1231. He didn't say anything about taking care of the Foreigner Registration Number problem with the new system. They've had a download around that businesses can use to recognize our numbers but right now there are only seventeen businesses that use it. He told me that they advertise it to businesses as much as possible but that there's no legal authority to make them download it. He also expects that more and more should start signing on in the future.
Maybe it would be best to put some more pressure on the businesses themselves. Anybody know the location of the site where the download is featured for businesses here? |
