half yes half no.. you can infiltrate , and have some doors open to you. if you keep your mouth shut! but once they know you are AMerican.. the doors will just be slammed in your face!! koreans dont think of you as Koreans they think of you as Kyopos! and I tell you.. most korean men dont like you!!! you get out of the military! you never went to Korean school. and now you return to your mother land and want to reap all the benefits.. korean men are not STUPID!!

Gyopos, it would appear, are the perfect means to sample the exotic delights of the West while raising minimum fuss amongst their family and peers. As staggeringly handsome as I am, I'm man enough to admit that I've been able to move up from the Canadian yeti territory to the Korean harpy territory on a consistent basis. I also have the rare privilege of receiving compliments on my Korean AND my native English -- which I suppose is more of an insult than a compliment, but I tend to take these comments in the spirit they were given. |
yes.. but they are saying it all to your face!
wonder what they are saying when you are not around!
| Quote: |
With all that heady luscious university-aged goodness, there are also drawbacks. Koreans tend to have higher expectations of gyopos, especially in respect to speaking the language and following the customs. Back when I was teaching, I got shafted out of a few leads for being gyopo which sucked -- I much prefer discrimination of the visible-minority variety. Finally, there is a small group of people who just don't like gyopos for whatever reason. This is more a minor annoyance than a drawback, like, "Yes okay, you hate me, c'mon, get on with it... ". I'm not the first, nor the last, person to get labeled that easily so I can't complain |
yes true.. also its not that small!! |
Never heard such trash in my life. Dude, perhaps you should get out of Itaewon once in a while. There are a few gyopos who aren't accepted but many are, dude, and you obviously don't know jack but seem to want to comment on stuff.
Many Korean companies look to hire gyopos with BIZ experience. There are many gyopos working for Samsung and other conglomerates with MBAs or other advanced degrees abroad. Sure, there are glass ceilings in a few places but others are getting to the director level because they do add value to the company.
There are quite a few gyopos making good money in the financial sector here. So well, Itaewonguy, if it makes you feel better believing the total bull that you do, go ahead. Many people such as yourself on this board are beyond mental help. |

Yeah, I lived in Sao Paulo. I met quite a few Korean-Brazilians. They didn't believe it when I told them I was an American who had lived in Korea for awhile either.
The Japanese community is nearly around 1 million in the Sao Paulo area alone.. but a sizeable Korean community too.
Paraguay and Buenos Aires also have significant Korean populations.. and Peru seems to have a number of Asians in general (heavier on the Japanese though).
Whats strange though, is even that Brazil has a very sizeable Asian community.. my Korean-American friend came down to visit and was considered very exotic and very popular among the women!! (But then again there is a sizeable portion of Brazilians with German, Polish, and other blond-haired people, and blondes from abroad were also very popular). Everyone is popular in Brazil! |

was that, now I will repeat it one more time for the slow people in this board!
.. many korean MEN dont like KYOPOS! becuase they are not American and they are not Korean! when ever they want to be.. they play the American card when it benefits them, then they play the korean card when it benefits them!
they dont go to military! and they dont follow all the korean customs! etc..
so some korean guys would prefer to hang out with native foreigners than kyopos becuase of the jealously factor! NOW I said some KOREANS!
not ALL!! ok.. NOT ALL!!! and of course sum koreans would rather hang with kyopos becuase of the language and more acceptance by looking.
I can say all my korean friends are Kyopos!
also many koreans realise that Kyopos couldnt find employment in their countries so they had to come here.. they ask the questions.."why are you here"?
havent you seen the doco's that show life abroad, here on tv about kyopos??? they are all shown as losers, money wasters, etc...

Again, you add to your stupidity and prove why you flipped burgers back home. Where is your proof that Korean men HATE gyopos? Many Korean men marry gyopo women, and gyopo men marry natives and earn a good living here.
And well, I guess those who are stupid don't even know it, such as yourself.
And good for Korea, many talented gyopos FORGO higher salaries back in the West to work in Korea. Oh yeah, Itaewonguy, you passed on lucrative careers in the janitorial and custodial industries to be in Korea, my bad! |

Yeah, a lot of kyopos really clean up out here, both in terms of (wo)men and careers, that's true.
I wonder, though, how their parents feel. Do they feel that they sacrificed for nothing, dragging themselves to America and initial immigrant hardship just to have their children move back to Korea, or are they gratified that their offspring have succeeded in their motherland? |

| I suspect most Korean parents are like mine, and supportive. In spite of the sacifices a lot of Koreans make in staking a life overseas, I suspect most like to see their children retain some Korean language and culture; hence the Saturday Korean classes and expensive summer immersion trips etc. This makes perfect sense to me; I imagine if I had kids growing up in Korea, I'd be sure they learned English and acquired some overseas experience. |

I guess being stuck in the ESL scene wouldn't expose you to much to the number of gyopos in the financial sector. And well, perhaps the gyopos YOU know have the same anti-Korea attitude that you do, thus they are hated by the natives.
The proof is that I've met plenty a gyopo with buckshot credentials who work here for relatively less pay. A lot of them don't stay for good but some do. Try getting out of the McDonald's kitchen sometimes, even if it might cost you a promotion to french fry guy. |

Man, shut up, will you? What makes you an authority on this subject? Seriously? 8 - 9 years hanging out in Itaewon? Can you even stretch your Korean far enough to order a refill at the Burger King?

Yes, I'm sure "some" Korean men confided with you. Who gives a flying F what they think? Really? Personally, I'd be disappointed if all Korean men liked me. It means I'm not screwing enough of their women. |

the previous comments made by itae pretty much hit the nail on the head in my experience living in korea as a kyopo. it DOES in many ways suck cuz ur expected to know and ABIDE BY (which is often the DIFFICULT part) korean customs. i really only have the basic bare bones understanding of it, when it comes to manners, addressing elders, etc. i'm really americanized but since i'm also korean, i get a lot more flak than u waegooks get cuz waygooks have an excuse to not know. i don't.

korean men dislike gyopos for the same reason asian americans hate white guys. they "steal" their women. korean men don't often marry gyopo girls cuz they're way too westernized for them. gyopo girls i know see korean men as too controlling, chauvinistic, fem, insecure, etc. and korean men see gyopo girls as too liberal, promiscuous, etc. to make anything more than a booty call.
this is often cuz of how asian males and females are portrayed in the media (male = impotent, weasly, spineless, fem/gay; female = exotic, subservient, sexual, etc.) asian males tend to be at the bottom of the food chain when it comes to interracial dating (exceptions to every rule however). but this is a whole other thing that could make this a very long post. don't really feel like getting into it.

totally agree. they saw my short time in korea as a good thing (although a lot of bad situations arose. soju can bring out the demon in me ) they know i want to go back and support it largely because they know i wouldn't want to stay there permanently. the US is the place i'd want to raise my family in. raising kids in korea would be too psychologically traumatizing IMO. |

i guess its a bit different for me, my family didnt even really want me to spend a whole year in korea. they always sent me there when i was younger and wanted me to know as much as i could about korean culture and traditions but i think if i had found a k-guy there and wanted to settle down, they would have been devastated. |

| It's probably different for girls and guys. Makes sense because when Koreans get married, the wives become part of the husbands' families and generally go where their husbands go. |
